That would cause it to function normally without the plastic handle but not work with the handle? Have you taken it apart before? I’m also unsure which way the small white paddle should face inside the handle.

I’ve taken maybe three or four Tacoma and 4Runner shifter consoles apart before because of my 4WD swap. Try de-pinning your original shift interlock and putting it on your new shifter. I had to do this for my conversion because the 4Runner interlock was faulty.

Not sure what you mean by that. The only new part I have is the plastic handle with the button you press for your thumb. I’m starting to think that the rod/spring that has the small white paddle on it is bent and is dragging on the inside of my handle. Here is a photo of what I think may be bent

I can shift it all day long as it’s designed to like this but as soon as I try to slide the handle on, it doesn’t work.

That’s a 2nd Gen 4Runner. None of those parts will work with your 1st Gen Tacoma. The 3rd Gen 4Runner shifter is the one that will work.

Sorry I'm not more help, thought just crossed my mind as something to look at.
Here's a link with a decent diagram you might be able to verify everything is in place
