Good luck man. It does get tough in a few spots, especially for stock rigs. A spotter is highly recommended.

 

Nice! Yea it looked like a great area for camping and that stream at the end is sweet. I actually did drag the hitch at one spot and I'm thinking it might be time for one of your hitch skids

 

Hey folks. Just getting started on this forum. My 4th 4x4 in last 35 years. Two F150s, 1986 and 1992. 1997 Mazda B4000, now first Taco, 2016 TRD Off Road.

All my trucks are primarily for bush use.

Up in BC Canada, Kelowna area now. All of BC is pretty much one big 4x4 road. I have done about 200 remote solo 4x4 trips in my lifetime, goal to reach fishing lakes that no one else can reach. Twenty of such trips just this past summer. I have a dozen favorite lakes in BC I fish that in 30 years I have never seen another truck or human. Lots of black and grizzly bears, and often I am hiking into lakes alone where no truck can go. I live for fishing in remote backcountry, can never get enough. BC has hundreds of lakes where you can fish alone if you don't mind a 100 miles of off road per day. Big spaces.

I have a 10 foot aluminum, 12 foot inflatable, and 2 belly boats for hike in lakes. So different look each time.

The lakes I fish have roads in that are in dense bush, typically truck width, a lot of risk with high cliffs and often several thousand feet elevation. Normally the last few miles into such lakes are 1st gear 4-low all the way, all rocks and old washed up riverbeds. A lot of care is required when travelling alone. On a recent trip I blew 2 new Goodrich ATs same day on sharp rocks. So lots of fun up here in BC if you get a chance to drive up here!

Concluded our camping trip with some off-roading at Verdi Peak, Tahoe. First time off-roading in general and the snow was a blast. Used to putting down fresh tracks on a board but in the Taco was just as fun.

Watch out for snow driving. If you are new to off-roading, it can be a world of hurt. Thirty-five years of off roading for me, in backwoods of BC Canada. On my 4th 4x4 now. Even with a ton of experience, last early spring, I found myself stuck in a spot that was only 2 truck lengths off the dry logging road. Logging roads dry, but up to 2 feet of snow in spots once you pull off onto trails, and early spring snow (5,000 foot elevation) is wet and slippery, not that dry cold stuff that is a breeze. No amount of crawl mode or rocking got me out. 2016 Taco, access cab, snow tires, and 500 pounds of sand backs in the back for weight, made no difference. Shovelled myself out. Basically, once your tires start to spin bad, and you are on a level spot, time to back out in reverse while you can. On one trip with a very rugged 1986 F-150, snow tires, same weight in back, got stuck so bad in the snow it took me 8 hours to get out. Used my chainsaw to cut down a bunch of 20 foot pines and built a road about 100 feet in length to drive out on. That was early spring, trying to get to a remote lake for first of the season fishing. Wet deep snow. Drank almost a full bottle of Jack Daniels that day during the digging out process. To keep warm. BTW, don't drink and drive. This was way off road, no humans or other trucks within 50 miles. Lessons learned the hard way.

 

Really hoping my XBull recovery tracks will help if I ever get in a situation like this. That and the shovel. Glad you made it out!

 

Few more pics. I do about 20 - 30 remote fishing trips per year in BC. Almost 50 years of fishing, about 120 lakes fished in BC now. I have a bunch of lakes that I can fish year round and never see another truck or human, even in peak fishing season. A lot of off-roading and the reward is the lake at the end of trail. You can see one of the trails in is basically a very bad ATV trail. About 1.5 miles of that trail to one of these lakes. Two different lakes, less than 5 miles apart. In thirty years I have not seen another fisherman or truck on these old roads. Getting a lot of big scratches and dings on my 2016 Taco. Which is ok, it's a truck.

 

That sounds gnarly! Appreciate the feedback. Luckily my buddies were pretty solid and had some good pointers plus the recovery gear which helped haha luckily we didn’t need it though

 

Ran China wall today and blazed fresh tracks in the snow. No one else around. Seems like the trail is pretty overrated it was easy and the obstacles are fun in the snow. I slipped off my line on the wall and had to winch off but had a successful second attempt. At least I got a scrape on my slider and dented my tcase skid up to the exhaust as per usual!

 

The doggo and I ran up Glacier Lodge Road to see what the snow is doing.
It was just laying there.
