You will likely have/want to install a second button for it. I suppose you could probably figure out how to wire it to the stock rear one, but I personally would rather have a button for each locker.

okay sweet. is this Harrup Elocker something I can get from ECGS? This is the first I’ve heard of this option.

    Looks like it:
    https://eastcoastgearsupply.com/i-23993470-toyota-t8-clamshell-harrop-elocker-3-90-up.html

I would assume they would be able to install it if you are doing a swap, but I do not know for sure. I did not go with a front locker with my 5.29s -- I haven't found a situation that my rear locker won't get me out of, personally. Not recommending that you go one route or another, just some information.

You only want to lock the front when absolutely necessary. I'd suggest a separate switch for it. You can absolutely get it from ECGS

These guys know their stuff. You can get away with some steering wheel turning through some loose junk but you do NOT want both gripping and attempting to purposely turn the vehicle with front locked. Something will need to give. Ditto the back, but of course a bit more leeway there.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
Can someone point to the thread that has the breakin process? Can’t seem to find the page it was discussed.

@Texoma what’s the oil change periods again?
The shop has done three heat cycles. Was curious about the recommendation for oil changes. I know everyone has their own opinions on oil, but wanted to ask you. Thanks man

Go to ECGS web site, scroll to bottom of page and look for tech articles.

Picked up the truck today. Gears are definitely pretty loud about every other time I get above 55mph. The shop said it should quiet down over time, especially if I upgrade to larger tires :notsure:

That’s an odd statement from the shop. I’d like to know how larger tires would make a difference in diff noise.

Agreed. Their reasoning was that large tires reduces the speed that everything rotates at. While true, I wouldn’t think that ~3” larger tires would effect the rotational speed that much.

The last guy that they installed 5.29’s on stock tires for had the same problems. They messed with it and checked things multiple times but could never find anything wrong. When he installed larger tires the sounds mostly went away apparently. I’m skeptical, but I guess I’ll see.

Big tires = more aggressive tread pattern , which in turn = more tire noise so you can’t hear the diff

Sounds almost exactly like you’re driving a vehicle with aggressive mud terrains when going a consistent speed above 55mph. Then on decel below 20mph coming to a stop it’s a high pitch whine.

Only ~120 miles on the rear gears right now.

Doesn't sound normal but I am no expert.

i can >just barely< hear the 5.29s whirring in mine, with 285 BFG AT's, and then only sometimes. i doubt i could produce a video where the sound was detectable. Is the shop that put yours in established, and reliable with standing behind their work? if I had heard discernible noise from my rear end when I picked it up, id have turned around and dropped it back off, and rented a car till it was fixed.

I know a lot of people recommend ecgs and that’s who I’ll be going with when I regear. For those that have used them. How’s your gear noise?

The only noise I have heard out of all the ones I have built is the same noise that most OEM gearsets have. The throttle release whine at 55mph. You almost have to try and make it make this slight noise. Imagine about a second or so noise just as the throttle is released at the range between forward drive load and engine decel braking.

Do lower gears make the torque converter and overdrive disengage with less load?

They are very well known in the Las Vegas area and said bring it back if I have any concerns. They average 2 regears a week. I am currently running the stock size tires, so hopefully it’ll go away when I upgrade...
