Engineers are like superheroes in this thread. These the same dudes that built the pinto*.

*Unless you are a chemical engineer then you get a pass because you probably know something about the actual properties of the oil.

Gonna need to see some proof that the engineers who built the pinto also built the 3rd gen Tacoma.

This guy needs to spend some time here on TW, he gets the same questions.

    why is that?

"Why should I change my oil? Do I really need to change my oil every 3000 miles? Here is discussion on oil change intervals by experienced ASE Master Technician Ray Whitney. The functions of oil, what type of oil to use and what influences manufacturer intervals."

I would say this thread has finally died. Thank goodness.

A closing note from one of the greats. Way before my time, but I have lived long enough to appreciate how gifted Jim was. Maybe the greatest American of his age. Strange to think his dad, arguably, started the Viet Nam War as commander of US Forces in the Gulf of Tonkin. So much history in one family.

    incredible performance:

Just did my second oil change on my '17 OR which is currently sitting at 12,125 miles. I dont think I will go beyond 5k as the oil that came out was pure black in color. I have a TRD skid plate but was wondering if there is a cleaner method when removing the oil drain plug?

Manual knows best. Synthetics are getting better, that's for sure. Do whatever you're comfortable with, but as long as you're running good oil with a good filter, things will be fine.

When I started hearing about new cars getting so many mile changes out of oil I was really skeptical, mostly because I've only ever driven older cars, but I made the switch to full synthetic mobil one 15k a couple years ago in my 03 Corolla, I think it had around 250k at the time which probably sounds a little crazy. I ran my first run for 8k and even though it was honey colored got kinda paranoid and changed it. Now I go 10k between changes and it's always honey colored when I drain. Saves a lot of money over time; and changing the oil in my car is much more annoying than in the truck by a long shot. Run the same stuff for 10k in the 15 taco too; always impressed. Rule of thumb, just check all your fluids every month or so just so you know how everything is looking and to keep an eye on the overall health of your vehicle.

Wait no, we got to send it to the lab to run some tests and see how much longer we can use it before we go on another 5k posts

Could be you idle a lot, are in a very cold climate or the particular oil brand. Even though all oils with the SAE certification and specs meet all specified requirements, they can formulate additives in various quantities as I understand it. Black in your case could just mean it’s doing its job.

My suggestion, try a different brand and if you like the result, stick with it

The operator, the operational environment and the loads, one passenger, 4 passengers combined with all the other operational variables can make a difference in trouble free longevity between two identical vehicles. This is why we use a blanket “safe” zone of 5k miles that just works, while others have issues.

Then there’s the matter of convenience. I believe I could go 7500K miles with no lubrication related failures, but I agree with the 5k tire rotation for best tire life. I tried 15k, 10k, 7500k and 5k works best in all cases. But I’m rotating tires and inspection at 5k, so to do it again at 7500 to change the oil makes down time inefficient.
Plus I’m covered at 5k if I need to do a couple weeks of severe service use, so there’s that

    Cheers!

Oil change intervals are a personal choice regardless of factory recommendations. I feel comfortable changing mine at 5k.
I'm good with that. My 2 cents for what it may or may not be worth.

Not advice really just where I personally am comfortable. Before synthetics I used to change the oil every 3500 mi. If it wasn't such a long, long time ago I'd think that I was actually saving money at 5k. o_O
