Rustproof or not??

The can states it's safe for rubber, etc... I spray the frame as best I can (top, sides, inside), cross members, control arms, rear diff, and any body seams. I try and avoid the brakes, heat shields, exhaust, rubber boots, etc... It's tacts up quickly, but I try and let the truck set overnight. It maintains a slight tack.

 

Thank you, so pretty much, try to cover as much as possible by just spraying it all over with some exceptions. Did you apply one layer/coat each time?

 

Just worked my way around the truck. It tacts up fairly quick, it will drip a little, and for the frame I'll hit it again after it tacts up. So basically one layer, then repeat next year.

Yea it’s mostly the salt which is why the frame replacement has been mostly limited to north and Midwest states.

Also, if you really had 8 trucks in 30 years, that’s a new truck every 3.5 years. Even Toyota’s don’t have serious rust issues in 3.5 years.

 

I do not get rid of each truck as I get another, I tend to have 2-3 vehicles at a time. Also couple were family hand-downs, like the 72 Ford F150 I had for 10 years myself.

 

i don't recall EVER crawling underneath my truck in over 21 years until TW came by the way almost a year ago and i had to do some investigating
never really ever had reasons to
never knew this was such a serious problem as long as it was routinely hosed down and all that in the winters
very much a mystery still to me

... i mean other than crawling under to get a stuck basketball my dog had put underneath sometimes

 

Can happen with any car, but trucks have a lot more frame exposed to road debris, rocks, rain/salt/snow. You can have a fully protected frame that is coated well but once a rock chips it, then you now have exposed metal that will rust. It's all natural part of growing up

 

I’m a firm believer in rust proofing but you guys that are doing the first-time-spray of your entire truck in about an hour with only 2 or 3 aerosol cans of Fluid Film aren’t gonna see the best long-term results if you live in the Rust Belt.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s better than not using anything at all but it’s gonna take a lot more cans and time to do the initial spray properly. Re-applying/touching-up the second year you might be able to get away with using a only a few cans but for the initial spray you’ve gotta really get inside the frame, doors, fenders, body cavities, etc as well as the exposed undercarriage (anywhere that snow/salt/brine/water could go)
IMO, If you can’t do it properly, it’s probably better to spend the extra money, get a reputable shop to do it right the first year and then just use a few cans to touch it up yourself each year after that......My 2 cents anyway.....

 

I agree. When I get a new car now I drive it directly home (on clean dry roads) and put it in the garage and go to work on it. I disassemble things to a point that most people would think is crazy in order to get rustproofing in all of the nooks and crannies.

I know I used paint in some areas (which I now think is a waste of time). The brown film is probably Amsoil Heavy Duty Metal Protector.

On my 2016, I used the Amsoil followed by Fluid Film.

 

I Krown everything. Here is my virgin truck a couple of days after picking it up from the dealer.

 

I live in NE Ohio and have not done anything to my 17 Tacoma as of yet. Frame is still clean and just went through an inspection at the dealership where I was told they saw no problems. It will be coated soon when they take it back in for the rust proofing the dealership is going to apply. This is with the recall notice I got last month.
I pressure wash it underneath every week during the winter months. Its a pain but so far it has been working.

 

What are the black push plugs in the outer part of the rocker panel?Could they be removed and gain access to the inside of the rocker panal for spraying in Rust Check or Crown?

 

Yes, if you do it when it's warm temperatures you can easily pop them out, spray inside the rocker panels and replace them.

Use something plastic so as to not damage the plug or paint.

This doesn't need to be done twice a year imo. The fluid film isn't getting washed off, so re- application isn't required as often.

Done it once and maybe will do it again in the spring.

 

I bought a cheap $5 or so trim removal tool kit (plastic) and use it to twice these plugs, most come out with your bare hands. Pull them all and spray in the holes.

 

I was just at my dealership for an unrelated problem and they updated me on when my Tacoma is going to be rustproofed. They said it is a time consuming process and they will have my truck for 2 days.
They said the frame has to be clean and dry before they can apply the film to it. They say it is like the fluid film I keep hearing about on this website. It is also being applied by a machine that seals each section of the frame. They said they can only do 3 or 4 Tacoma's a week because it takes so long.
Has anyone else heard a similar story?
I also went to the rusted Tacoma frames website and could not believe what I saw. There were so many Tacomas with clean bodies but split in half.
Also saw a posting from a guy in Canada with a 05 Tacoma that had to replace his frame even though he oil sprayed and Ziebarted it every year. Thought his frame was solid until the gas tank fell out. Makes me wonder why we pay so much for these things.

 

Toyota should have a factory option to have Line-X sprayed on the entire chassis and underbody before the assembly process begins.
