Best of luck! Hope you break that streak soon.

Edit: not laughing at the 3 year streak, that first statement is funny, tho.

oh at the point I have to laugh at it

I’ve put in the work, but it’s been a mix of hard to hunt small plots, and the little known Texas public land draw hunts (most of which I spent chasing nilgai). If I felt like I could have worked harder I might be mad, but since I’ve done what I can I’m not mad.

I'm twiddling my thumbs this weekend. Gun season opened today, will get back at it Monday to try to fill a doe tag.

There are only two people that know where my spots are. My son and my wife. Some years ago, my wife worked at a retirement community. Employees and their spouses were permitted to hunt deer, archery only. Entire campus was about 1,000 acres with 500 or so wooded. First year I hunted there, it was the first week of November. Looked at the topo and aerial photos and picked a few spots. Turned out the one spot was about sixty yards from where I parked. The second evening I hunted I dropped a nice seven point. Mind you, I watched guys park, walk in, drop down into a creek bottom shielded by three hillsides. In four years I killed four doe and three buck. Everyone tried to pump her for the location(s). She'd just smile and say "in the woods". Hell I'd call her she'd drive over and walk back in to give me a hand.

Current location we've (my son and I) killed nine deer in five years. Five good buck and four doe. When I get there in the AM, we gear up, no flashlights till were far enough away. Coming out, we'll wait till the others leave. Too many assholes hunt for stands and figger "Oh this must be a good spot." One guy I run into when he's walking his dog, always asks where exactly do you hunt, he had a permit for there, doesn't get one anymore because he only sees a few doe. I sure as hell ain't telling him.

Been burnt too many times "sharing" locations. Took a friend to a spot one time, he thought it would be a great idea to invite one of his work buddies along. By the end of archery season there was an additional half dozen guys traipsing around. Yeah, we don't hunt together anymore. Like 'Stock, that's something that really jacks me.

I've had 2 things that burned me (that I can think of off the bat) and it's by 2 guys that I'm great friends with, I just think they didn't realize what they were doing. I never mentioned it to them due to our friendship, I just won't tell them places to go anymore.

I shot a pretty good 9pt years ago. I had taken a friend with me to a long, narrow strip of public. The woods are about 1/2 mile long and 200 yards wide. I shot that deer on Dec. 18th.
The following year, he hunted that small strip every single time he went hunting. From Oct 1st until mid January. Every. Single. Time. Mind you, he drives by countless public land spots to get to this place (including my favorite swamp place that he doesn't know about).

I use to have a morning doe spot that I killed 4 does in a row on 4 opening days. I showed a buddy exactly where it was and told him I wanted the first crack each year; I would go in one time, whether I shot a deer or not...he could have it the rest of the season. We both had climbers, he went and put a lock-on right in 'my' area. I really didn't want a lock-on in there advertising that particular area.

I realize that this is all public land and it's ours to share, but sometimes you have to be selfish.

also to add to this, these same people that want your location dont tell you $hit about their locations...Nor will they help you out if you got something you couldnt handle. So after the time I told them about the Elk, I wont say crap about where I see what, I just say yeah Ive been seeing doe or a few elk here and there.

Best of luck! I have a doe tag left and if I fill that I may get another one. Or two. I'll be back at it Monday afternoon. There's a couple of guys at work really wanting a deer, so we'll see how it pans out.

I'll see that 10 year old ancient dinosaur and raise you a 20 year old dinosaur. I STILL have a my Mathews FeatherMax. Use it as a backup, but she's still a quick, quiet, stone cold killing bitch!!
