Would swapping up from the 3.73 to the 4.10 have a big impact on mpg? Im getting ~ 19 right now. I would assume it would drop a bit. Input?

What size tires are you running? Might as well go up to 4.56 if your running 33's.

go with 4.56's then, You will actually get better mileage with these and 285's than with 4.10's and 285's and have more power.

Whats a 4.56 going to limit me at freeway speeds? I do 70mph @ ~1800-2000rpms. A guy I work with has a TJ with 4.56s, 35's and gets 10mpg

Higher gearing will always lead to decreased mileage if you actually calculate real driven miles and not what your odometer is telling you.

edit: by higher gear I meant higher RPM. Sorry for miss expression. But I stand my point, higher RPM = Lower MPG.

4.10 is already steeper than foactory gears and tires when paired with 285 tires. Why would going even steeper than that give him beter gas mileage? Why would Toyota intentionally give us worse gearing for gas milage AND power simulataneously? Your post makes no sense.

ok...last 3 post really screwed me up going with higher gears gives you worse gass milage? i always thought you got higher gears for better highway driving and mpgs and but you would sacrifice offroad crawling and performance

4:10s are lower gears so you will be turning higher rpm so you truck will feel more power but actually u have more torque . hp from engine will not change with different gears. At 70 mph you will be topping out on speed but you will get there alot faster.

Changing your tires and rear end gear ratio is a game of give and take.

The simple version is that changing the size of your tires will change the RPM your motor needs to run at to maintain a given speed. The bigger the tires, the lower the RPM for a given speed. Rear end gears are the opposite. Lower gear ratios will reduce RPM for a given speed and higher gear ratios will increase RPM for a given speed.

In my Taco with my current setup, 70mph is ~2000rpm. Increasing the tire size will reduce the RPM's needed to run at 70mph, which can result in improved MPG. However, if you increase the tire size too much, 2 things begin to happen. First is that the lower RPM's at a given speed may mean your no longer in the power band for your motor and performance will suffer. Combine this with the fact that bigger tires are usually heaver and will take more power to spin and the end result is that the truck feels sluggish and MPG may suffer.

To counter the sluggishness of bigger tires, you can increase the gear ratio in the rear end of your truck. Increasing the gear ratio to 4.10 or 4.56 will increase the engine RPM at a given speed, and hopefully put your engine back in its power band.

To answer the question of what RPM you'll be running at with a given tire/rear end combo, try out this calculator.

To answer your original question about MPG, changing the rear end ratio will affect it. I dont know how much though. It is one of those "Your mileage may vary" (no pun intended) things.

    Couple of questions...
    1. Who makes the 4.56 gears?
    2. Does anyone make STRONGER gears than the factory ones?
I'd assume that for a 4x4 you'd need gears for front and rear *unless you never engaged 4x4 mode... I'm really curious as to how much this would cost as I live no where near a good off road shop.

I believe all 4.56 gears are actually weaker than stock gears becaus e of the reduction in gear teeth on the pinion.

Can't they change the material? Ion Nitride the steel? Something to make the gears "stronger"?
Also, did some research on TTORA and found a few companies, but this gets confusing fast. Good luck to the OP!

according to this, http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html with 33's and 4.56 gears you will be at 2319 RPM at 70 mph with an automatic transmission.

with 4.10 you will be at 2085 RPM. Now you have to remember those are way heavier tires than stock so you will want to have the RPM's up to stay in the power. You may loose a bit of highway mileage but you will gain some city. If you live in flat area the 4.10's may be fine but if you do any offroading at all, you will love the 4.56's. It depends on what you use the truck for.

If you match the gear ratio with the tire size, IE get the RPM's back to where they were with stock tires you will get your mileage/power back, do a little searching/get some common sense and you will find the same

The 3.73's are ok for stock 31" tires, but OP is upping the size to 33's so he needs a lower gear ratio to get the mileage back.

, but he won't be anywhere near topping it out at 70.

This is true, but the difference is so small its almost negligible. Plus most aftermarket gears are WAY better than the stock toyota gears as many members on here will verify.
