I would avoid going to dealer for anything at any cost. I would recommend finding a small shop with good reviews/feedback.

find a reputable shop, or best route is have a truly qualified and knowledgeable friend be your mechanic. DIY is good too, but not always an option and certainly not convenient. What could take a good mechanic a hour might take you several as a DIY tackling a certain project for the first time.

 

I tell them I have a K&N re-usable cabin filter in mine and I take care of that myself. I also tell them I rotated my tires yesterday so they mark that off the list.

After my last Toyota Care service I will take mine to a guy I know that has a repair shop.

 

Same here. I actually did use one of the free oil changes, but that was because I was also having the trans TSB done at the time. For me it's just more of a pain in the ass to go to a dealer, and wait. I also don't trust them to take the same attention to detail and care as I do, so I do all the maintenance myself. Currently sitting at 70k. Just got done changing the spark plugs last weekend. Going to change the Tranny pan fluid next.

 

I know this is a small issue. I recently took my to come in for the 25000 mile service which involved pretty much only tire rotation. Turns out that they found a nail in the tire and didn't bother to repair it or to tell me that, it was written in the paperwork that I got back. Somehow is hoping for better service than that.

 

As a DIY you seem to be doing it right, congrats!

Better than me in that I don’t use any TOYOTA apps or anyone else’s free app, unless it directly supplies something I need and then it’s gone. I’m just not going to provide any free marketing to anyone that they’ll use later on to jackup prices by knowing when a mass amount of people are do for a new product. But I freely admit, no way I can win that war by myself, but I’ll fight to my last breath.

As far as any damages go, small shops can’t hardly afford the skyrocket rent and the insurance they usually get minimum or higher deductibles to be able to afford it.
They can cover the small stuff themselves, but the big stuff, it wasn’t their fault.
And $8-10 grand damages is a lot, not to mention additional headaches that may come later as a result to repair it themselves, if they forget to put oil or leave the plug loose.

I will also say that no way anyone can beat your QC when you hire yourself, but not everyone is able to do so.

 

Good deal, almost all shops over torque your wheels with their impact weapons of mass destruction instead of torque wrenches, and you end up with vibrations.

 

I would only go to any dealer if it was for warranty. I am going to pay for oil changes from the first one on. Our local dealer has been caught not changing the oil or filter when it was paid for by a cop friend of mine. I won’t play that game.

I keep getting letters in the mail from the dealer I bought my truck from saying it's way overdue on maintenance. No it's not, fuckwits! You're just never touching it again

 

This has been a known problem. Really wonder how many owners have these vibration issues with overtorqued lugs.

My local GM/Toyota dealer is untrustworthy (to put it as nicely as possible). I'm not even using the free maintenance. I'd rather screw it up myself.

 

And your mom and pop likely throws in 10w30 into Everything they see... lol

Probably 95% of all the wining vibrations you read about here that the dealer can’t resolve, with 2% for out of balance tires 1% going to defective tires 1% going to warped rotors that got dropped during shipping and storage, and the rest to out of round drive shafts or wheels, give or take

I had them do the free services, then it was all on me other than my water pump that died last week... The procedure said the engine needed to be pulled so I walked away and just paid them, come to find out that the engine doesn't need to come out at all, it's just easier to replace with the engine out.

You should also grease your U-Joints if applicable. It's easy with any grease gun and some time lying on the ground. Get the correct rated grease.

My 2016 has 71k miles on it and after the 4 free oil changes I did everything myself. My 50k service was quoted to be $750 and I asked for a detailed rundown of what that service was so I could go home and think about it. After reading through it was basically a tech running through all fluids and only checking them for their level and maybe doing a visual.

For $400 I bought the tools and all the fluids to do a complete diff/transfer case/engine oil/coolant flush, new front brake rotors and pads, a vacuum pump to bleed the brakes, brake fluid for a full front end flush.

It took me a nice Saturday in my driveway to complete everything but nothing is rocket science under there.

75w90 for the front and rear diffs (unless you are lifted with ECGS like me, you need 75w140)

Ravenol J1C1003 SAE 75W Manual Transmission Fluid - MTF-3 Full Synthetic for the transfer case, get 2 bottles of it in case you spill any, you need a liter.

Engine I just replace with mobil 1 whatever 0w20

Serpentine belt needs to be replaced at 70k, $75 belt and half an hour

If you're handy, DIY. If you're not, find a local garage.

 

I still go - my 2019 (bought new in mid Jan this year) has 37K miles , so it is out of warranty. I do have a Lifetime Powertrain warranty on the truck - and it requires the dealership periodically inspect it ,and we must keep records of all required scheduled service (though it does NOT require Toyota Dealership service)...I've got a lot of years with the dealership and the service dept and have never had any issues. I do think this dealership is the exception, not the rule.

 

My local dealer is one of the good ones, truck goes every 10k for its service. Been going there since it had 4k miles, will be going this Friday for its 130k mile service. Never an issue, or complaint.
