Yesterday I purchased an '05 DCLB with the non-JBL system. Immediately I miss having handsfree phone operation, and my 1tb of music from my portable hard drive. While I used to do custom mobile audio and security installs, I haven't followed the industry for decades, and my most recent vehicles have all had Harmon Kardon factory systems, which were just fine for my old ears.

I find myself looking to upgrade, but not for audio quality or volume reasons at all. I'm fairly certain the vast majority of aftermarket HUs are going to outperform the stocker anyway. I want to stay as far under $200 as possible, as I want to keep my truck budget going to other mods. The things I care about are:

Bluetooth phone connectivity with phonebook caller ID. I want to see when it's someone in my phone's addy book who's calling me.

Rear USB input, for the aforementioned portable hard drive. I'll be velcro mounting the hard drive in the center console, I don't want a cable stretched out across the cab to the front of the HU. I would actually prefer if it didn't have a front, as I see so many with cheesy little USB covers that break and fall off. I could live with it and just not use it though.

Steering wheel control adapter compatibility. To stay under budget, I may not add the adapter right away, but I want the option.

Adjustable illumination color. Nobody wants a green display in their amber cockpit.

The following would be nice bonus features, but not necessary at this budget:

    *Touchscreen
    *Apple Carplay
*DVD player (wouldn't get much use, I really just need the USB and AM/FM)
*Double din form factor. If not, recommendations for a single-din dash kit that doesn't look aftermarket
Waze or Google Maps display compatibility

Sorry for the long read, and kudos to those of you who soldiered through it. I could just go to Crutchfield and grab any old unit in the desired price range, but what I'm looking for here are recommendations based on the experience of others. Which ones you've used which are complete POSes, which work well, other places to look besides Crutchfield, best quality install kits, etc.

Thanks in advance for the help!

You can go on ebay and get a used 4400nex for 250-300. It has touch screen, wireless carplay, and will do all of that

I picked up a JVC KW-M750-BT at Bestbuy yesterday for 199.00. They had several other units on sale also.

Buying used electronics remotely isn’t even slightly appealing to me. Too much opportunity for issues.

That sounds like a good deal, I will check them out again. I was in there Saturday, but the only person near the car audio section couldn’t even tell me which ones have rear USB inputs, which is a must for me.

edit: I just checked that model out on Crutchfield, and yeah, that’s a nice unit at a smokin deal. Which install kit did you go with, and in which color? Trying to find the best fitting kit with the best color match and factory finish appearance.

I got an oem touchscreen that was $50. Lol. They’re not that bad. The only thing is that the one I got, cuts songs off in the middle, kind of like a cd when its scratched. Other than that it’s good. You might find one at the facebook marketplace or on craigslist.
