Don’t know anything about the Ranger other then it’s an ugly truck besides the Raptor version. But I do agree with you the Tacoma powertrain is garbage which is why I traded mine in for 2006 Tundra.

I was raised by a WWII veteran, uncle's, friends dad's, practically every male of a certain age were also.

If anyone told me prior to 2001 I would own any vehicle produced by a Japanese Corp, I would have laughed at them I think.

My wife decided she wanted a Subaru Forester, so we bought one.

That was the most capable, reliable, fun to drive in any weather and longest lasting daily driver owned to date, and opened my eyes to what quality vehicles could be.

TLDR; isn't it obvious that if as you say "Tacoma loses every comparison test (well not to the Frontier) yet people still buy them" , it's more than "fanboy mentality" at work? The 3rd gen is selling despite the lukewarm review.
I get it that a small minority of TW members have been personally butt hurt by the 3rd gen in some capacity, but really don't sympathize with any of it.

I remember that thread and others like it- you are correct.

In early 2016 when I joined, I also remember many threads by members happy with their 3rd gens being virtually dragged over hot coals by the TW "upper classman" and their goons...lol

    Remember that?

That's part of the TW experience, and it's what makes it so popular imo.

I think the Ranger has been sold overseas for over 5 years. The USA just got it.

Just added toolbox and roof-rack to haul my fishing boat 100's of miles into the backwoods every week. Goodrich K02s, Bilstein 5100 front and back, no lift.
My best truck ever, was a 1986 Ford F150. Steel panels on interior doors, same for ceiling, and floorboard. There was a rubber mat on the floor. Bench seat, no back seat. Drain plugs behind the bench seat so you could use a hose to wash out the inside of the cab.

8 foot box, straight 6 cyl, 4 spd manual. Low end grunt like no other. The Taco even in first gear 4-low still goes downhill too fast, have to use crawl mode if you really want to go slower.

My old F150, and manual... you could be in first, low-range, and let the clutch out and walk much faster beside the truck. It would never stall in this scenario.

Paid brand new (CDN $) 15,000. Drove it for 13 years, 200,000 miles. Replaced the clutch after 10 years, when it had 160,000 miles on it! That is pretty much unheard of especially with the hills I drive.

Other than that, put new shocks on the first year, new tires, etc. Just maintenance after that. I also had a camperette on top, and would lug my 10 foot aluminum on top of that.

I used that 20 - 30 times per year for hardcore off roading on my remote fishing trips in BC. That truck took a lot of torture. Other than the usual scratches from the bush, almost looked new when I sold it.

Paid $15,000 new, sold it for $4,500 to a guy from a logging crew. It was also minus the camperette.

My 2016 Taco is not as rugged as that old truck. I wish you could still buy a bare bones truck. No carpet on floor, no fancy interior, no auto windows or A/C etc. I would buy one in a heartbeat.

All the new trucks, including my 2016 Off Road Taco (which I really like) are just too fancy now. The electronics are ridiculous, and this from a guy who worked 20 years in the computer software industry.

By the way, was a carpenter and a west coast high seas commercial fisherman for 16 years. Multiple serious back and neck injuries forced me out of the work I loved. Had to retrain to a desk job, but I still get out full time in the backwoods on solo remote trips. Always a heartbeat away from a back meltdown on every trip, but can't handle city life.

Snazzy colors get more comments. I got positive comments all the time on my Inferno orange 2017.

However, my next truck will be silver.

    This is true.

The current Ranger is really just a placeholder until the real new Ranger comes out in a couple of years.

Ford didn't want to miss out on the suddenly hot mid-size market and did some mild bodywork and badge engineering on an existing platform to get the Ranger out there.

This is probably another reason for lukewarm sales.

Why spend $40k for a new truck when you know that it will soon be supplanted by a superior platform at roughly the same price?

There is no comparison here, when my Tacoma hits a 100 k I’ll be shredding through the mountains of South America the ford and Chevy will have already be pieced out in a junk yard.

I just looked at a 2017 Chevy 1500 Custom with 26k miles. The reason I looked at it, it is selling for ~$24,000... My 2017 Sport with 46+k miles it going for $29+ on trade in. Nope, not trading my taco in on a Ford nor GM over manufactured junk. Doubt me, go look at your local GM or Ford dealer used vs. Toyota dealer with Taco or Tundra used

Ford and GM did not report sales for October on the site where I get numbers. Here's the report that was available today.

I honestly wouldn't mind a reliable and tested placeholder instead of a brand new model. That new model could have early issues. Plus smart buyers are picking up leftover 2019 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 FX4's for 10k off MSRP at the moment. That's a lot of truck for $30k.

Nissan needs to give the poor Frontier a makeover, sales would go up if it wasn't so ugly.

I'd roll one as it sits. Some will say the interior needs to be updated, but I don't even use half the shit in my TRD OR

If i was not able to get a Tacoma with a MT, then a Frontier would hqve been my next choice.

    Shhhhh....

I'm going to look at one tomorrow.... :spy:

I wasn't really interested until I saw the 10K off.

And then I saw the addition of a tune making 325HP and 365TQ at the wheels (that's around 380HP and 430TQ using 15% driveline loss) on an otherwise stock truck and I became more interested...

I'll give an unbiased opinion tomorrow evening of my thoughts on it.

This is why domestics don't hold value for squat. They're always discounting the shit out of them and buyers know this.

I still would not buy that Ranger if it were 50% off.

Resale value doesn't matter to the people who keep their vehicles. A $30k Ranger that can out-perform a $48k TRD Pro on and off-road is an amazing value for those willing to keep that vehicle for a long time.
