This is why you need to replace your VVT screens

For you guys working on your VVT solenoids and thinking about not replacing (or just cleaning) your screens, this is after blasting them with brake cleaner and compressed air. It's hard to see the scale in the screens unless you hold them up to the light. Spend the $10 and replace them.

These gunk up the same way vtec solenoid screens do in Hondas, should be added to the maintenance list every once in awhile for sure.

Wondering about this myself.

 

Item number: 15678A, one located towards the bottom right and the other towards the bottom left of the diagram. As far as I know its just a secondary filter for the OCV solenoid that controls the variable valve timing. Gunk similar to what builds at the bottom of the oil sump tends to build up in these screens over time. I checked mine on my truck and after 50k and they where both clean... my older Honda would get gunk built up like every 30k though. YMMV

 

This is why these trucks need regular oil changes. Great info gents!

What all was involved on getting in there to check on the screen when you last did it?

The passenger side is easy enough to get to, a hex shaped plug on the block almost directly behind the engine oil dipstick. The drivers side is kind of behind the alternator IIRC (its in the same location as the passenger side, just mirrored). I had to swing it out of the way to get to it. Maybe if you are crafty you can get to it without doing that.

So passenger side you can get to, driver side would require you to at least swing out the alternator.

 

Was the engine drained of oil when you did this?

 

I honestly don't remember 100%, it was over 2 years ago but I don't think it was drained... I remember a small dribble of oil coming out but that was it. The screens are high up from the sump.

 

Hmmmmmm. I'll probably do it when I change the oil next. Thanks!
