So warranty is up. Still going to toyota for service?

I stop after it expired but my truck needs alignment now should I take it Toyota? I took it too les schwab tires and they left worse then when I took it in wtf lmao

 

I have an indie shop I use if it's something I can't handle myself.

 

I had the 6 month service done recently on my 2019 and my local dealership bent over backwards giving me discounts and cash some intentional, some not.

I purchased the truck in June but it was built in Sept. 2018 (MT kept it on the lot, I guess) so because it was over a year old I went for a oil change as well.

The Toyota dealer quoted $80Cdn for an oil change, same as a quote from Midas.

I was told the 6 month service also be $80.

When I arrived for my appointment I was told that there was a recall for the collision avoidance system so instead of me waiting for my truck, they were going to need the truck for 3 hours. They normally offer a $10 taxi voucher (it is about a $10.50 taxi ride to my condo) and I would just walk my dog home, take the cab back when the work is done. But it was pouring rain so the service rep offered a second $10 taxi voucher. The service rep then up sold me to the Premium Oil Change which included an oil additive for $25.

While waiting for the taxi, I go get a complimentary coffee and then I go over to my service rep and I ask him if he would write down the name of the oil additive so I can research it. Instead he hands me a brochure and a free 11oz can of BG MOA.

I then go over to where you pay your bill and hand the guy $20, asking for change so I can tip the taxi driver. He pulls out a 10 and two 5s but I say I would like $5 in coin (we have $1 and $2 coins in Canada). So he then hands me the $10 and two $5s AND the $5 in coins....thanks Toyota for paying for the taxi and the tip.

When I go to pick up my truck I am expecting a bill of $80+$80+$25+tax but instead the bill comes to $173. including tax. It turns out that instead of charging $80 for the oil change plus $25 for oil additive, they bill me $44 for the oil, $25 for additive, $7.80 oil filter, $2 gasket, some eco fee and shop supplies. It also turns out that the Premium Oil Change also includes 180 days of roadside assistance.

So I guess I will continue with Jim Pattison Toyota in Victoria, B.C.

 

Every time I went in to my dealer for the free oil changes... (or anything else for that matter) I sat there for fucking hours.

Last time oil changes were due of my Taco and wifes 4runner.. I did them myself.

Lo and behold... I found skid plate bolts were loose or missing on both vehicles.

Never again.
I will never go back to the dealer for ANYTHING unless absolutely necessary.

They cant even perform a simple fucking oil change in a timely manner or without fucking something up.

 

Do you not get Toyotacare for the first 2 years in Canada?

 

When I was buying the truck, the first thing the paperwork guy said was that some people incorrectly think that oil changes are free. He then went on to try and sell me a $2,500Cdn 7 year warranty which may have included some free maintenance but I don't know because I wasn't really listening to the guy as I had absolutely no intention of buying what he was selling.

$80Cdn(about $60-$65 US) for an annual oil change on my low mileage truck works fine for me.

 

That should be Toyota don’t care service.

 

If I'm still alive when the package I bought runs out, I'll take it to the shop where my daughters work in the office.

 

The oil changes are free for us in the states. We get 2 free oil changes and all the 6 month checks for free, for the first 2 years or 25k miles, whichever comes first. It must be different there.

 

I still use my dealer for most service, which in reality is just oil changes, greasing the drivetrain, and tire rotations. Mine does good work reliably and are same cost or cheaper then the local independent shops. Someone else can do it whether it’s -20F or when the mosquitos are out in force since it only needs 2-3 changes a year.

I replace the cabin and air filters myself, and changed the diff oils myself.

 

Why are they putting in an oil additive?

 

For this reason I am letting them handle all of my included services. However when those services are done I will be performing my own. But if the job is one of those that are better suited for someone more capable and insured, Ill go to the dealer and let them take the risk.

 

Find a good mechanic you can trust. Stay away from dealerships after the warranty expires. I worked at dealerships previously. Dont get me started at what I saw.

 

My CRV once needed a new oil pan since the bolt hole was stripped. Honda wanted $400 for the job, and I pointed out that all my oil changes were done there during & after the warranty. They refused, I moved on. My buddy @ Midas threaded in an oversize bolt and it held forever after that.

I usually avoid dealerships due to that one incident.

 

If you have something happen after warranty, and you continue your services with the dealership, you're more likely to get goodwill assistance. Otherwise Toyota and the dealership will look at it as you not scratching their back so why should they scratch yours.

 

I think the oil additive is like Lucas Oil Stabilizer. It's just a money making Premium Oil Change up sell but since they also gave me a free can of the BG MOA, next oil change I'll just add the stuff myself.

 

That stuff thickens your oil up and dilutes the additives in the motor oil, I'd stay away from it, but that's just me.

 

Ya, the additive will probably work better in my '93 MR2 with 216k kms (134k miles) and 10w30 syn.oil.

 

I have had good and bad dealership service experience.

the good ones had a service area waiting area with a window view to the service area. There I could see them installing oil pulling skid plates , greasing my driveshaft as I requested, using torque wrench on the tires.

the bad ones don’t seem to want you to see the truck serviced.
The good one was a combo toyota /Ford dealer and it was serviced in a Ford “ fast lane”
Also had water bowls and dog biscuits for my dog, a soda machine and popcorn for me and good wifi. They always included a vacuum and a car wash.

unfortunately I have moved from that area (Durango Colorado) and the service in Texas are not as thorough or transparent,no vacuum, no car wash. They don’t seem to care if we come back or not. Now that toyota care has passed I will perform and record my own services unless it is something beyond my capabilities.
If I ever find a dealer or shop with the service I was used to getting I would probably use them and bring my own oil.

 

Update when Toyota did everything for 150 and everyone else was charging me over 200 WTFFFFF lol
