What's the experts opinions on buying used? Any inherent risks that would not be obvious to the uninitiated?

Well I saw my aunt this evening and she gave me a little info but couldn’t remember the year for sure. She said he did get it appraised and 75-100K! She said it was minted 1 year only in Carson mint but mint was instructed to destroy them. For one reason or another 100 of them were kept and now only like 33 than have ever been graded. I actually might see the guy who found it tomorrow so I’ll ask him more about it. Guess it was found on or near some land that my grandfather owned (family trust) at the time. Sorry it’s been so long

Wow! That's interesting! I will have to do some reading. What a cool deal! I like this kind of stuff and can't imagine finding a coin like that.

Feel free to post up any more info you get.

    Thank you for posting!

Talked to the guy who found this quarter and the way he told the story was that Carson mint was told by Philadelphia mint to destroy these quarters minted in 1871. The mint had issued out 90 of these as pillars to the community already and the rest were melted. Only 30 have been graded and possibly the more than one of these were graded more than 1 time. He said valve was originally 85-135k but further evaluation has gone to obscene numbers. I’d rather not mention the number that he gave me but it’s a lot!

WOW, that's crazy! To find one laying in the dirt blows my mind. That was a score of the highest order! That's really cool!

Do you know who appraised the coin? I don't mean to pester you, but this really interests me.

    Thanks for sharing!

Years back that same guy was detecting on a 180 acre parcel my uncle had bought and before he subdevided it. The was a few dump piles so there was evidence of activity there. He did find a buried metal box with 15 silver dollars- 1880s-1890’s. Of course he shared these with my uncle. This is only like a 1/4-1/2 mile from the big find.
All I know is that the coin was sent “back east”.no trouble at all and I didn’t want to bug him too much plus we’re were at his business.

Does this count as metal detecting if one house threw all these out in the trash?...

    Those treasures are out there.
A local guy found 5 (or six, depending on who's telling the story...) Carson City $20 gold Double Eagles at a site out in the desert. Supposedly he was able to retire when he sold a couple of them. I have heard the story from many different people, so there is likely some truth to it.
My buddy found a 1904 Morgan dollar near Goldfield NV. In fact, I posted a pic earlier in this thread. Goes to show that the stuff is still out there.

Wha...?? Somebody threw all of this away?? People are crazy.
I suggest you spend the time and inspect every piece you have there. Very good chance you are sitting on some $$$.

I didn't show you everything, there were so many older watches in disrepair, as well as a lot of watchmaking things, as well as this used stamp book of old unused stamps that had $1,463.75 written on the outside...
