As long as you take time to reduce the places for water intrusion, they are just fine.

It would be smart to check the planitary gear assembly. Often they are stingy on the grease.

With that said, I almost think it's a sin to mount a winch on the front when you live in the snow belt. All the crap on the road gets wind driven into the winch.

Hard to argue. Now I'm thinking I really don't need a winch as much as want one. First valid point of view that makes me reconsider my thoughts on it.
    Thank you Kirk.

I have a old 5000lb mounted on the front of a farm trailer and it has never not worked when needed. We do keep a make shift cover over it.

I’ve been doing a lot of research on what the max load means. So a winch only has its full rated pulling capacity when only one wrap left on the drum. So let’s say you have 1/4 spooled our you effectively lose 3000lbs on that 12k rating but the work load increases by 3/4s. This is what I take from it.

Anyhow I’ll be getting a badlands winch bnib for a killer deal I’m gonna try it out. I’ve read they have updated the manufacturing and it’s supposedly way better than years past.

Basically it will pull at max load for 45 sec before overheating the motor and the recommended cool down is 30 minutes. If your pulling half load (6k) then you could extend that time to maybe 1.5 minutes.

If all you need is a short bump off a rock it would work fine, if your stuck in mud or are using it for farm/ranch type work you'd be better off getting a more reputable brand. Smittybuilt's aren't bad for a low budget winch. Warn, Milemarker, and Ramsey winches are some of the best out there but you'll likely pay for the quality.
If you really want to try out a Badland winch, my father bought a 12k version that's never been mounted or hooked up. Since he's passed on I'd sell it to you for $200.

Some really useful info right there. I figured "Max Load" wasn't something that I or anyone here would ever really hit. I was about to pull the trigger on it when James hit me with that max load stuff. Considering the weight of my rig and what I'll be using it for I chose against it. It sounds like you @Taco critter won't have that much weight on it and just purpose use, so a steal at less than 600 especially compared to other options!

Edit: 200! lol I'd take that in a heartbeat. Nice guy James :)
