I have this mount at the start of this thread from Wilco. My full size spare is currently on the drivers side of the bed. I also installed CaliRaised LED bed stiffeners at the same time. There is still some fine tuning I need to do for a perfect fit but so far it seems to be holding up. The bed stiffeners are very heavy duty and hopefully will prevent any excess flexing in the frame. I also plan on adding a ratchet strap and additional hardware to help keep the tire mounted and secure.

You're taking a risk, it won't take much movement to flex the top of the bedsides enough to end up with cracks like in the first post. You won't see them until they are too big to do anything about as they will form under the bed rail cap.

Thanks for the warning. I've been thinking about another storage method for the spare. Now that I know about the flex problem though, I'll look out for it. I primarily use 4WD on sand/ beach. There isn't much off roading/ trails where I live and def no rock crawling or extreme off roadinf. Hopefully sand it a bit more forgiving. Thanks again for the advice.

If you carry it like that all the time it won't be the offroading that causes the damage, it will be riding on the freeway where the up and down isn't very noticeable but is shifting the tire around quite often.

Not sure where you live, but pavement isn't smooth anywhere here after a couple of winters. Any bumps, will cause the cracks not just offroading! Either mount it in the bed with straps or under. If you can't fit under, then swingout is about the only other option that won't cause harm to your bed rails.

I made the switch to a swingout tailgate, although a bumper would have been more functional for me. It has its advantages and disadvantages.

Reviving an old thread to see if anyone had this same issue mounting the spare to the bed rail against the rear window location? Mine is a 35 but I assume the rear location would be more solid, but maybe not. By the way, my current rig is a 3rd Gen (2019), not sure if this issue was corrected.
Also, did the warranty cover the repair OP?

I might just need to wait and save for a rear hitch swing-out mount I guess...its a shame Toyota can't make a truck bed that can be used as a truck bed.
