    @LivinOnEdge

    You don't think my entire rear axle is failing, do you?

    What did the OP @PennSilverTaco do to get banned? Or does the blue line through his name mean something else?

    I had one less-than-pleasant encounter with police almost 7 years ago where I got stopped and interrogated for taking pictures (I have Aspergers Syndrome and it was my first encounter with police EVER, so it kinda traumatized me). I've decided that I need to let it go, and that police really need our support right now...

    My truck blew its right rear seal last week. It’s sitting in my local shop getting new seals, bearings and drums/shoes tonight. 140K miles on the odometer. Paying that will be painful.

    Will be promptly doing the breather relocation mode Thursday while turkey is cooking.

    Do you have any idea what could be causing mine to repeatedly fail? The diff breather? Where is that located?

    it’s the little silver plug thing on top of the axle housing just left of center. In rust belt states, they do rust and stop reliving air pressure when the inside heats up, which can pop either side seal.

    My friend says "stop going to the dealer"...

    This is one of those "No shit, Sherlock" situations, but I have a feeling the dealer will pay to fix it for free AGAIN.

    $10 bucks. For the plug itself.

    search in here for “Breather Mod” and get a threaded hose union, 6-8’ of fuel hose and relocate it up higher.

    or buy a pre-made breather mod setup...I think Toy-Tec sells one - but it’s just cheap sourced parts marked up.

    I have no idea friend. I’m not that mechanically inclined nor qualified. However, if that was the case, the technicians should have been able to tell you that right off the bat.

    The seal itself can be seated at different depths within the axle shaft tube to compensate for the groove in axle shaft. Or, purchase another axle shaft. It's a pretty easy job actually, if it is something you are willing to tackle. Brakes will be the hardest (assuming everything else goes well), but drum brakes are pretty easy...

    don’t know. Don’t know if your breather valve is bad either. Possible the left seal hasn’t been seated correctly either prior time it was replaced...could be breather or just bad luck.

    I suggest checking breather valve though, cheap to replace, might as well replace and know it’s not a reason in the future.
