29er doesn't fit in DCSB

Title says it all. I have to turn my 29er sideways to get it to fit in the bed of my truck with the tailgate closed. Usually, this isn't a problem, but when I have kids bikes and other gear in the bed of the truck, it's a minor inconvenience. Any thoughts here?

 

the overall length (and probably wheelbase) of a 29er is inherently longer than a 26er of the same 29er frame size due to the increase in wheel diameter.

I'm currently developing something to solve this issue, as I had it with my 29ers.

Current options are:

• Tailgate pad
• Hitch rack
• Roof Rack with bike tray

 

A 26er is the new 29er.

 

Easy fix, cut a notch in the tailgate

 

My 27.5 doesn't fit in the SB either, I slid my mount closer to the center and wedged the rear wheel to the corner so it didn't bounce. Because of this exact reason and for covered storage I have moved away from that and now have a hitch rack. It is faster on and off as well

 

The topper is an added challenge but with dropper posts I can still use a tailgate pad...or the 4 place hitch rack I found on Craigslist.

It will fit just fine if placed diagonally in the bed. Leave the front tire on and you will be good to go.

I dont think I have any pics, but a cheaper alternative to a $150 tailgate pad is to use a yoga mat over your tailgate, then hang the front wheel over that. Use a bungee over the top tube to prevent any unnecessary movement. Before I put a bed rack on the truck, this is what I did and you can easily fit 3 bikes that way.

 

I have 2 lefty 29ers (medium and large). I don't take the wheels off for obvious reasons. Both bike fit in the short bed just fine

 

I guess I do! You can see in the first pic that I made a wheel stand to help keep it upright. That thing turned out way better than I could've hoped for actually. Mounted the road shower in the center of the two bikes as well. Some spare wood and a few screws is all it took. Fit snug too!

 

So...based on the responses...there's currently no fix for this aside from the tailgate pad?

I'm not losing sleep over it, it's just slightly annoying. I'm surprised that a 27.5 wont fit either. If I let the air out of my rear tire, I can close the tailgate. Frame size L.

 

What size is your bike ? Have you thought of a bed extender?

 

I mean...I can put my 29'er in the bed laying down w/ no problem. Have you tried that? Rear wheel in first towards the front, angled towards a corner, then turn the bars a bit. I just assumed you wanted it upright.

 

Right. As is always the case with consumerism. They have to convince people that one is the new "it thing" to keep people buying. Fact is I had a Trek 26er and decided I like the advantages the 29er provides. Each does something better than the other.

Large. Not sure if Scott gives that dimension. So anywhere from 19.5 to 21.5 i believe.

 

It’s pretty standard that a 19.5 is large and a 21.5 is xl. If it was a medium it may fit.
