What happened on the top of your LCA? It looks like you've got a few gouges in the metal there.

This, completely this. You haven't truly lived until you've looped around on the 101, or the 202. Crossed town on the 51, or drove the ghettos in the 17. 6 open lanes of pure gridlocked traffic. Ugh.

I would typically just measure the gap with calipers and order the appropriately gapped shackle that's rated for at least double the GVW loaded weight. That would be your starting point, I wouldn't get anything less than 15k. 20k shackles would be ideal. Make sure you get shackles that are stamped on the side with the weight and avoid Chinese pot metal after market ones.

Where do you find 15 to 20k shackles with a 3/8s gap?

The gap is called the 'Throat', what is your exact throat size? You'll be able to get that measurement from the bumper where the shackle will be mounted. Keep in mind that bare metal vrs painted/powder-coated metal will add to the thickness. Easiest way would be to measure with calipers, fastest way would be to eyeball it with a tape measure. I know I made the mistake of taking what the manufacturer of my bumper stated for what size shackle I would need, but that was unpowder-coated. After PC, the size grew enough to make the shackles I had useless unless I ground the PC off. I take the measurement and add in .25", that would give you a good 1/8" on both insides of the shackle for a bushing while still having enough free play.

Edit: I may have misspoke in my previous thread which Ill edit after this, you'll want at least double your GVW for your shackle weights, this will depend on your mods/armor etc. Stock taco is ballpark of 5.6k, so double would be 11.2k. If you have a winch, you'll want your shackles to be heavier rated than your cable/rope. Think safety. I know that I need to get a larger winch then what I have, I have the Warn m8000s, I'll need to get at minimum at 10k, realistically a 12k winch with creative uses of snatch blocks to safely recover my Tacoma. If you need to use poly/rubber bushings to keep your shackle from banging around in transit, you could do that too. Just find your throat size of the shackle and take the mount width and hit it with some math.

I understand how to measure it but where do you get a shackle with a 3/8 throat, rated for 15 to 20k and how would you get a tow strap in it?

3/8 seems extremely small for recovery points, IMO. Also, I edited my previous post. Here's a 14k with 1.25 throat: Crosby Shackle

    https://www.grainger.com/category/material-handling/lifting-hardware/shackles?attrs=Working+Load+Limit|14,000+lb.|14,500+lb.|17,000+lb.&filters=attrs

As far as the tow strap is concerned, I've used a second larger shackle and loop the eyelets of the strap into that. Unfortunately, safety comes with a price.

If you want real world proof that 3/8" is strong enough come wheel with the SOS crew sometime and we'll show you. Also ask @SearArtist he drug me out of URE by my mounts. Also Eddy posted on IG someone with an extreme side pull out of the snow by them. It's nice looking for the larger ones but the ones I've seen are just surface mounted to 3/16 plate on the bumper which would be your weak link. Like @dan0mite said our trucks frames are going to be the weak link or if you get stuck enough you'll find every weak link possible recovering something extremely stuck and would probably be very upset.

I don't run shackles at all until I actually need them no need for them to be on and dangling around. Plus I think they look silly on all the time. Shackles are not meant to be tightened down right. Take some recovery or rigging courses to get an understanding of the proper use of shackles and different straps.

Also testament to how well the hitch design holds up on the rear bumpers.

Why don't you run synthetic shackles? A lot safer.
