Good to see you where able to answer your own questions. As long as the topper is still in good or better condition, I’d say that price is quite fair. Never hurts to haggle, but even at asking price your in good shape.

 

Question for all current Softopper owners. Has anyone successfully replaced the buckles on the Softopper itself? If so, what buckles did you use and how did you go about it?

I know that sea to summit buckles work but was curious if there are any other options.

 

Has anyone with a long bed softopper noticed this? The metal pin holding the frame together in the middle is trying to poke through the canvas. Im not concerned with how it looks, but more concerned about it potentially wearing a hole in the canvas over time. Curous if this is normal? I also have a softopper on my short bed taco, and it doesnt have this issue, only on the long bed. Just got the long bed topper recently and am just wondering if this is normal? its on both sides

I need to replace one of mine. I think ST sells replacement buckles for 2 bucks I think.

What’s funny is I spoke to a Softopper rep months ago about them having replacement ones and I actually sent them a link to those exact buckles lol I couldn’t buy them because the minimum order was 2000 pieces so I wonder if he passed along the idea to anyone over there. Regardless this is perfect ordering now!

 

Mine is about three years old and does the same thing. No sign of tearing or ripping.

You can put a small strip of duct tape over the rivet. That should give it a little more protection.

 

Thinking about getting one for my truck, but I've got a few questions:

(1) Is the Softopper waterproof or "just" water resistant? Any issues with condensation and/or the straps getting soaked?
(2) How often are you re-sealing the seams? Once per year?
(3) How's the heat inside the bed on a 90+ degree day with the black topper?
(4) How's the durability on the front/rear vinyl windows? Do they need to be replaced relatively often, or are they relatively long-lasting?
(5) Is it possible to "stack" the windows so that you can run the mesh window under the vinyl window? Or is it just one or the other?

I've seen some people try to weather proof some of the openings, dont know how well its worked. I've washed the truck at a coin pressure wash place and did not notice alot of water in the bed.
(2) How often are you re-sealing the seams? Once per year? I think the guy I bought it from did it once. I've never done it. But in az we dont get alot of rain.
(3) How's the heat inside the bed on a 90+ degree day with the black topper? - it can get pretty toasty in the topper. I've seen some people put reflective windshield cover type material to help bring temps down.
(4) How's the durability on the front/rear vinyl windows? Do they need to be replaced relatively often, or are they relatively long-lasting? - I think if you live in cold climate the windows can crack. Mine is three ish years old. It's still very clear.
(5) Is it possible to "stack" the windows so that you can run the mesh window under the vinyl window? Or is it just one or the other - I dont think you can stack the mesh aand window flaps. It zips on the side so you can only have one on.

 

1. The actual material is water proof. Its the same as a boat top. It breathes enough that you don't have to worry about condensation. The water can get in the corners and such depending on how you set it. If you can see light. Then water can come that way. Its very adjustable to get it where you want it though.
   
2. Re-sealing. Once a year is a good bet. Mine is 3yrs old and I haven't re sealed. But I do need to, small drops at the stitching in heavy South Florida rains.
   
3. The heat inside is well, hot. The biggest change was when I added that flexible insulation on the top. Between the frame and top material. Drops the inside temp A LOT. Plus its flexible and folds up with top as needed.
   
4. Durability. Very. Just as advised dont try to roll or fold when its very cold out.
   
5. No, cannot stack. One or the other. Window and mesh is sewn into whole panel.

 

I did the 3rd brake like mod today too.

Looked through quite a few posts, and didn't see any tan softtoppers on a silver 2nd gen. Anyone got pictures? I'm trying to decide between black and tan....

Is it that it may be tucked in or maybe the position is off?

this one also seems to sit up higher by the cabin. as if it’s a 2nd gen Tacoma version.

I, personally, like how it looks with the longer panel. especially if it were to rain.

 

2nd Gens to sit different on the 3rd gens. They will be taller on the 3rd. Since the 3rd has taller sides from the factory, the 2nd gen is already built taller. Which can pull the rear flap off the 3rd in the rear.
But if the 2nd gen one is cheap enough, then it might be a good deal?!?

 

Does anyone have the link for the rubber stoppers you can put on the rear flap pole to keep it from sliding when it's rolled up. I know it was on here, but I've searched many pages and cant find it.

 

Rubber stopper? I remember seeing a few used hose clamps or something of the sorts. Found a mention. Rubber grommets put on.

Thanks for the reply, but I do understand that. I’m just curious about the rear “flap”. The first picture I posted seems to be too short and doesnt extend like the one in second picture.

I’m beginning to think they just tucked it into the bed. I’ve read more than a few have tucked in that flap for whatever reason, instead of having it out. But even in those pictures, it didn’t look like that.

 

Doesnt look tucked. Looks like a 2nd gen on a 3rd gen. There's probably a pic or two of that setup somewhere in this thread.
