Would love to have a place up around Genoa so I could look at the Mississippi river everyday. I miss working on the towboats up that way. :(

We were hunting for Native American pictographs and we found several. We also got treated to 3 Bighorn sheep cresting a hill right in front of our camp, running down, then walking up the mountain next to us. Then walking along the ridge, I swear the leader was posturing up on us. The experience lasted several minutes, it was really cool. Only the second time we have seen them.

If I was local and went there I would be packing a 5 gallon bucket of hand picked rocks home with me each trip.

I just ordered my Tacoma, a 2020 TRD OffRoad with 6ft bed, and I'm planning to do either a rooftop tent setup or a slide-in camper. Those are my only considerations because I want a completely self-contained rig, with everything I need to camp mounted to the truck. I'm not at all interested in pulling a trailer or any other detached solution. I'm leaning toward a FourWheel Fleet slide-in camper for more comfort and space, but I haven't ruled out a rooftop (or rack-top) setup either, as that would be A LOT cheaper, but I'm fine with spending the $$ for a setup that is comfortable and that I'll be satisfied with for many years to come. I'm just gathering info at this point...my truck isn't even coming in until Feb 2020. Any thoughts, opinions, suggestions, issues that I should consider? Thanks!

    Camper Shell 2” level
I have a camper shell on my truck, which granted is a bit different than a slide in camper, but I opted for this route over a tent because of several reasons. First off I think roof top tents are overpriced. Yea they look sweet, but at the end of the day it’s still a tent. Also, I wouldnt be using it enough and it would be constantly on top of the truck subjected to all of the elements. For me, I wanted something that I wasnt going to have to worry if it got too windy or too cold because I go camping up in Colorado so those two things arent uncommon. Maybe someone with a RTT has other opinions, but those were mine! I also found a heck of a deal on a camper shell on Facebook Marketplace so thats another big factor.

If you're going offroad, a FourWheel is going to be really heavy. I'm not a huge fan of RTTs either, they are a hassle in the rain and weather. Plus, you have to dry them out every trip. That's a big hassle.

I went with a ARE MX camper top and built a platform inside. It's heavy, but still a lot lighter than a slide-in and offers a lot more shelter, convenience, and security for your gear than an RTT. The walk-in option adds a few inches in length so it's easy to sleep in.

I'd definitely do the camper top again, but I added a Foxwing awning with annex and have literally used the awning twice while camping (and never used the annex). I would opt for one of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y3NDMLJ next time for less weight and 1/10 the cost.
