Man I hate when people say just get a 4wd. Dude search to find good deals, I got all my parts under $1000 then sell your parts you don't have any use for anymore and get some money back.

If you have to pay for labor, forget it and trade for a 4x4. Otherwise, just start collecting parts. Not too many guys on this board doing solid axle swaps, but if you can find someone doing that swap, then you can buy their ifs and use the parts you need. Then you need a trans and transfercase.

As others have mentioned, there should be write ups available on the internet somewhere. If it were me, I would collect the parts, do the front end setup one weekend, swap trannies and add transfercase and drivelines the next weekend.

My understanding is that it's all bolt on on the tacomas. Not the same thing, but my uncle converted an F150 from 4x2 to 4x4. If he didn't tell me, I would never know. Do it yourself and get the details right, you will have bragging rights then.

Listen to this man! But yes there's so many threads about the swap, just search and you will receive.

+1 i love my prerunner, but if your needs are a 4WD for other reasons then try to find parts first.

It will be way easier and save you the headache and cash. Plus if you do the swap, it will never be 100% right. There will always be some little thing that bothers you because you had to "rig it".

Believe me I have modded cars in the past and learned that there is a point where you have to stop and just start with a different platform.

The Prerunner and 4x4 are the same chasis. ALl he would have to do is add the stuff to make it a 4x4. Even better, is the first gens had a manual T-case. IIRC, there is a block off for the T-case shifter, that can be easilly cut, and removed for the stick.

Everything should be easy in theory... Until you start tearing things apart. Then you realize you have the wrong part or you forgot a part and your truck is your daily driver you don't have a truck for a few days..then days turn into weeks..and weeks turn into months.

If you dont know what your doing, then yes. However, there are tons of online resorces that can help. In many cases, buying the same truck, but 4x4, that has been wrecked, can make for an easy swap. Then you can sell the rest of whats left to recoup some cash.
