How much to change a pre-runner to 4-wheel drive?

How much would this transformation cost?

 

Too much...way cheaper just to go out and buy a 4WD...

 

IFS or SA?

 

There was a guy selling a complete IFS front end for like $400 a little while ago.

 

Man I hate when people say just get a 4wd. Dude search to find good deals, I got all my parts under $1000 then sell your parts you don't have any use for anymore and get some money back.

 

If you have to pay for labor, forget it and trade for a 4x4. Otherwise, just start collecting parts. Not too many guys on this board doing solid axle swaps, but if you can find someone doing that swap, then you can buy their ifs and use the parts you need. Then you need a trans and transfercase.

As others have mentioned, there should be write ups available on the internet somewhere. If it were me, I would collect the parts, do the front end setup one weekend, swap trannies and add transfercase and drivelines the next weekend.

My understanding is that it's all bolt on on the tacomas. Not the same thing, but my uncle converted an F150 from 4x2 to 4x4. If he didn't tell me, I would never know. Do it yourself and get the details right, you will have bragging rights then.

no need u can wheel your prerunner just as hard as a 4x4. dont listen to other people. only thing is you might get stuck more often. more of a challenge right? haha.

 

+1 i love my prerunner, but if your needs are a 4WD for other reasons then try to find parts first.

well if you sell everything off to some 2wd that wants 4wd, its probably gonna cost you -$$$

It will be way easier and save you the headache and cash. Plus if you do the swap, it will never be 100% right. There will always be some little thing that bothers you because you had to "rig it".

Believe me I have modded cars in the past and learned that there is a point where you have to stop and just start with a different platform.

 

Everything should be easy in theory... Until you start tearing things apart. Then you realize you have the wrong part or you forgot a part and your truck is your daily driver you don't have a truck for a few days..then days turn into weeks..and weeks turn into months.
