How is it safer than a shackle other than it being used improperly?

 

Grind them down with a Dremel? And from what these companies that offer them are saying, that shouldn't be too big of issue.

I keep my Van Beest shackles in my recovery kit.

And I did not measure the “throat” size.

A good metal shackle won't come apart at a high load, and if it does you have bigger problems to worry about. At that point you've broke more than just the shackle.

3/8s is plenty big enough, I was stating I like the way one inch looks with the shackle mounted. I run with the shackle mounted because it is one less thing to dig out when I need to winch or hook up a strap.

 

What size Van Beest shackles do you use? They seem inexpensive but a high load rating.

 

That’s a shame, that’s my favorite activity. Measuring her throat size.

True to that. My shackles are buried under two car seats/bases and its a PIA to get them out all the time. As far as 1" vrs 3/8", I'm in the same wheelhouse as you. Thicker the better baby! as far as looks are concerned. Take that how you will. E'hem. As for the shackle 'throat' or 'eyelet to eyelet', grabbing some poly or rubber bushings would take up the side to side slack during difficult cross pulls. My only concern is a smaller point load on the center pin with a more narrow shackle mount. Perhaps I'm over thinking it.

I like running with my shackles mounted full time. Pisses the Jeeps off.

 

Our trucks will never put enough stress on a shackle(appropriately sized) to break it if it's used properly.

I am not sure- however, I Likely did not go overboard. Bought them from Southeast overland, under the previous owner. Traveling now, will have to look when I get home.
