ok I got harvest dates followed by "chopped" dates for each field. Please describe these activities.

    my guess

harvest - machine goes through stripping the corn off stalks but stalks mostly still up

chopped - machine goes through and chops the standing stalks in half

Well harvest is picking the ear off the stalk and shelling it. I don’t know what that are calling chopping. What we call chopping corn is to make silage. After the corn has developed and just starts to dry down, this silage chopper cuts the stalk off at the ground and chops it up blowing it into a wagon.

If you all in that part of the country still chop stalks that news to me. We quit that when we stopped moldboard plowing fields.

If these combines picking corn were newer ones they have a monitor that keeps track of the grain loss out the back of the combine.

A foot or so of the stalk should be standing.

There is a lot of factors that you need to figure out to know what the grain loss was even if they had grain loss monitors. To a farmer these monitors are great. They tell you if you have the combine set up right. Maybe you have the sieves closed to far and the grain won’t separate from the trash and it all goes out the back of the combine. Maybe the concaves are to close to the rotor and the corn is being cracked. Maybe the rotor speed is wrong leaving corn still attached to the cob and shit out the back of the combine. There is head loss too. When the stalk enters the head the stalk is pulled down with a set of rollers the stalk is never cut off. When the stalk is pulled down the ear hits the stripping plates just above the rollers. When the ear hits the plate it will usually shell a few kernels off which fall to the ground. There is just a lot of factors that play into grain loss.

There will be no corn loss after the first process. The second process is just chopping the leftover stalk.

well there is always corn loss right?

I saw lots stalks on the ground eaten up by birds.

when these stocks fall or are close enough ground that would be post harvest right?
