Interesting thing about Kettering...he invented a cabinet that heated people up as a treatment for neurosyphilis. It was called the Electric Cabinet of Kettering. It actually worked to some extent—the other important treatment during the pre-penicillin time was malariatherapy—giving patients malaria to induce fevers which would kill the syphilis bacteria. And then penicillin came along, and such treatments were rendered moot.



I trained under Kettering’s nephew, who was a gastroenterologist of some renown. Also a real hard-ass, but I digress. It was rumored he had inherited some of the Kettering electric starter money.
