That double overdrive would go a long way to making a 4.88 in a stock truck with stock tires more liveable for sure.

Why won't your local dealer allow for a reasonable test drive?

One can never have too many light bars.
In my opinion the 3rd Gen isn't a big enough upgrade over the 2nd Gen to make it worth switching. Especially with you having a 2012 which was right after they refreshed the interior.

Wait what? Your friend sold his 2nd gen because he thought a 3rd gen would be faster? Poor fucker.

I think it’s awesome when I see some dude driving an old, well maintained Toyota truck. Any idiot can buy a new one. Much cooler to have one that’s old and still kicks ass.

I have a 2007 TRD, access cab. Bought new. It's got just over $100k. If I live to be 85 (Female life expectancy, which I expect(hope?) to see and then some), it will be 45 years old. Cannot imagine selling it. It is just such a rock solid truck.

But I agree with your thoughts on the value of some of the new technologies. I will probably add a backup camera at some point (there are some really nice aftermarket wireless ones out there now. You can use your cell phone to receive the signal.) The after market blind spot monitoring has a ways to go.

On a funny, perhaps sick, but irrefutably valuable note: I recently saw what had to be a lane drift alarm keeping what was clearly a drunk/high driver in his lane. Gotta admit, that has value. :)

That's a good question that I'm not sure I know the answer to. Their test drive is to drive down a paved back road, around the block and back. All of which is low speed and flat driving. Our local Toyota sells a ton...and I mean a ton of Tacomas. Their attitude has always been, if you don't want it, I'll sell it to the next guy (and they do). So they have a more take it or leave it position and dictate where to test drive. I've asked to test drive up a longer stretch, uphill, of highway a few miles away (4 miles maybe?). Answer was No.

I bought the truck then quickly realized going back home from work (back uphill) that the drivetrain wasn't to my liking. I've heard some dealerships, through members of the forum, allow extended test drives, i.e. overnight, on the freeway, etc. Worth asking. Or if you know someone who has the 3rd Gen, ask to test drive theirs.

I wanted to test drive a manual trans, but our dealer only special orders those and are spoken for upon arrival, so no opportunities to test drive. I ended up test driving a used manual trans 3rd Gen at a Honda dealer after I picked up my 2014, just to try it. Definitely liked it better than the automatic, but I was moving to an auto trans for various reasons.

I would keep it! That's a damn good looking 2012 that is in amazing condition. I have 135k on my 2013, and you couldn't get me to trade it in for any of the 2019-2020 mid-size trucks.

How much would you sell it for? After a couple months with my new to me 07 I wish I had bought a 2nd gen new. Yours have less than half the miles mine has.

Drinking Lane Assist. I can see it written on the window sticker now. Might be a good selling point. :notsure:

All of those numbers points to only one logical answer which would be to keep it forever. Or as long as possible. Nothing will add up numbers wise any other way.

100% logic says to keep it. Period.

That said, you’re seasoned enough and if you’re financially independent and have no debt and all finances in order, well then, there’s a difference between logic and what you want.

By all means, keep it. That’s the way that makes sense. But if you’re sitting on a perfectly hefty retirement fund and have money to throw away on a toy, your call.

I’d still say to be wary of the third gen until you test drive and id still saying buying new is a horrible horrible decision for anyone who’s net worth doesn’t have plenty of zeros after it. Just unwise in every way.

But the same sentiment applies. There’s logic and reason and numbers, and then there’s “well I’m so financially stable that this worn affect me at all and it’s what I want.” Ha.

(I’d still keep it 100% and be proud of the best Gen Tacoma and not waste money).
