Frame rust recall

I heard that the frame rust issues may have extended to all 2nd gen Tacos. I have a 2013, has it extended?

I have a 2013 as well.I live in upstate NY,so the winter is pretty harsh on vehicles.

 

Same dealer as mine?

 

Extended all the way to 2017

 

Probably will be extended until the 4th Generation is released... same frame design.

 

The frames are slightly different and different compound is used. Still have rust issues though. Basically it’s part of the Tacoma DNA.

maybe when they do the dual platform with the tundra they can finally produce and coat a frame that able to hold up better in the elements

 

Extended to ‘17 so far. My dad got the notice for his 13 a few weeks ago. Don’t depend on Toyota to take care of you. Either start treating it yourself or find a local shop that you’ll touch it up for you annually.

 

I haven't received anything in the mail, but I called the dealership and they told me based on VIN that my '11's frame warranty is extended out to 11/2022.

 

I got a new frame and It took about 3 months to complete. Got to drive a purple rav 4 with shitty tires in the middle of winter. That was an experience to say the least. But After about a year of having my truck back I have had zero issues. So I am pleased.

 

Biggest thing I can recommend if you're getting your frame replaced is to go to a dealer that has been doing a shit ton of these for years now. Seems those that go to the ones who've only done a few or aren't well versed in this whole Toyota frame debacle end up having nothing but headaches/issues.

 

I better set up an appointment for inspection then. Wonder why I haven't received any notices from Toyota.

 

Make sure you call and talk directly to the service manager. If that means leaving a message and waiting a few days then so be it. Need to make sure the SM sounds like someone you can work with and wants to help out. I got burned bad by skipping this step.

 

I have read through about a hundred pages of this discussion and haven't seen anything that pertains to my exact situation. I was hoping to get some insight on my current situation (I know it's a dead horse). I have an 08 Regular Cab 4WD that has been sprayed a couple years ago but still has some rust near the rear leafs. I have heard talk about them not covering a frame if there is lamination issues. I also know about the 10mm perforation and that's where my question comes from. Based on the pictures would this be considered a perforation? There is not much left of the frame in between the two layers of frame on the back passenger side. So basically I was wondering from all of your experience if this would justify a replacement?

 

In order to be 100% qualified for a new frame, there needs to be a 10 mm hole. As bad as that frame looks, surely there's a hole somewhere. You need to find it before you go in for an inspection. The most likely places are near the catalytic converters. If you see a bubbled up spot, you can VERY GENTLY tap on it and flake away compromised metal. HOWEVER, if it looks like you've been punching holes in it, or you admit that you punched a hole in it, you're totally screwed for life. If the metal bends inward, bend it back out flat.

To qualify for a new frame, your truck also has to be less than 12 years old from the date of 1st use. With a '08, you are in the 11th hour and even possibly too late, depending on when your truck was 1st sold to the original owner.

I've mentioned it somewhere, on one of many frame rust posts, but the holes in my frame were just below the front tow hooks. I missed those on many personal, and Toyota inspections. So check everything.

 

Yeah, I’m the idiot that admitted I made the hole so don’t repeat my mistake. No bends. No tool marks. No shiny. Try compressed air if it’s really flaky. Take your skid plates off and peek up front. The most likely spots are up front in the boxed area of the frame. My 08 had no treatment on the inside so it literally rusted out. I had a spot so bad I pushed my thumb through not even trying. Should have broke it off and let another Ohio winter cover the evidence and played dumb in the spring. So figure out your trucks first use date. Mine was made 2/08 and bought late April so you may have time. Get a bright flashlight and take your time.

 

I know the V6 has a trouble spot near the cats but is that also true on the 2.7s? I'll have to check out the frame more in depth to see if I can find another spot. My 12 years is up in April of 2020 so I might have it inspected again in the early spring.

 

I don’t know. I would assume that there would still be a problem on the side that the cat is on.

Got my inspection done today, the dealership said it failed the inspection so now I'm just waiting to hear back from Toyota. Wish me luck!
