Touchy brakes

Brakes are too touchy and would like to firm up the pedal feel.

I almost hate to open this can of worms, but fuck it.

Do ceramic brake pads actually give a firmer pedal feel vs semi metallic or organic?

What is the OEM pad material on the current TRD Off Road?

For the guys that upgraded to larger tires, did that help reduce the feeling of touchy brakes?

 

Maybe I'll try some steel braided brake lines to firm up the pedal. I see a bunch of threads on touchy brakes, but have yet to see maybe anyone at all talking about changing lines or pads ... anyone?

 

My brake pedal did feel very soft so I went to dealer and they said it was normal and pushing the brake pedal hard was not necessary. Another case of "toyota says its normal".

 

If you could see my face right now. They must be friends with the Ford dealer.

Overall, I could live with it... but I'd rather improve it.

 

Me too. Ive noticed that at a red light, if my brake pedal isnt firmly pressed, my tacoma will creep forward without me ever knowing about it.

 

Oh that doesn't happen to me (manual). I'm mainly saying the brakes are touchy and I also end up stopping short of where I intended in traffic. Any variation of pedal effort to adjust to traffic stopping nets me way too much braking effect. Hard to explain I guess, but I have to really concentrate on how I'm applying the brakes at any moment when it should be a no brainer.

Ok now someone flame me for crying about it. I'm ready.

 

My brakes were annoying when the truck was new. I'm not sure if they "broke in" or changing tires (265/70/17 falken wildpeaks) made it go away, but they definitely feel a lot better now.

 

Off Road and Pro have the Electro/Hydraulic Brake Booster that is used to control A-TRAC and or Crawl Control systems so the pedal has a slightly different feel compared to the old Vacuum assisted style booster.

You will adjust to them before you know it.

 

I get it and felt the same initially...I've gotten used to it. 2019 TRD OR 6MT w/ 6K miles.

 

-Metallic brake pads grab hard and will stop you in a hurry, but will wear down your rotors faster.
-Organic pads, IMO, don’t stop very well and require a lot of pedal force. But they will make your rotors last a really long time.
-Semi-metallic is what I like/use and is right in the middle between Metallic and Organic. Not sure what stock Tacomas use though...

It’s seems weird on a brand new truck but....for a less spongy pedal feel, I would first try bleeding all four brakes. If that doesn’t firm up the pedal, i’d start pricing out some decent (not the cheapest) braided steel flex lines......

 

When i first got my off road i was burying the nose at every stop. I looked silly. I got used to it or it went away because now it's fine. It will be ok.

 

They're touchy to begin with. The TSS applies some brake pressure also in traffic when coming to a stop behind another vehicle. It gets better as the brake wear in. But just how they are.
