Skip the roof top tent. You can get a great ground tent for half that. Honestly rrt are not that great how many camping sites have you been to where the truck is parked on a hill not good rtt location.

OP - Do you need a pickup? May look at 4Runners as well. No need for a topper, and the stuff you have in back is closer to hand in an emergency.

Your comment sparked a good convo between my wife and I. We already have a tent for the ground as well. We’re going to skip the rooftop tent and get a mattress for the bed of the truck to sleep in. And move whatever is in the bed to the middle seats. Thanks for the point!

At this point I’m 100% set on keeping the Tacoma. It’s paid off and as much as I think 4runners are cool, I like the daily usability of being able to haul stuff around in the truck, which I do fairly often.

Out of the take off stock stuff you listed, what the fuck did you sell to score $4K and still have $700 worth of parts left to sell?

Just youtube Nitro gear on Tacoma. The videos do a much better job than I can do in explaining it.

Essentially, the Tacoma come undergeared at stock weight-that is why they always seem to be hinting for higher gears and hardly ever use 6th unless your driving downhill on the highway.

Then we all start to add larger wheels and tires and weight which compounds the problem.

    Best.

I don’t mean to bash OME’s setup, but if you have a reputable 4x4 or off-road shop within driving distance I would checkout their shop. Look at their rigs and talk with people that do this stuff on the regular.

This will probably be the group you end up hanging with anyway, if you start over-landing.

Warning - Unpopular opinion coming :bananadead:

I was in your spot. I inherited money and wanted to get all the toys I wanted.

I bought nothing and invested. I quadrupled it in 10 years.

Instead of blowing it on toys when I got it, I saved it for life. Bought a house and had kids. If you are younger, you can't grasp the shit storm of expenses that pop up when you are starting a family.

What I was gong to buy at the time was a 1944 VW Schwimwaggen and a 2006 32' Grady White. I didn't.

I could never recommend a shopping spree when you get money (for free-ish) that someone else had worked their entire lives for. They died and trusted you with their life's work.

If you won a lottery scratcher, then have at it and shop.

That being said. Since this is TW, We want to see the first $200,000 Tacoma. Spend Spend Spend.

    My advice. Be smarter.

Or get one of those big fancy Dodge Rams with all the bells and whistles. The power is incredible and fun to drive.

Dude, he said this is only around 5% of his inheritance-this small fraction shows he has money sense.

It doesn’t sound like he needs advice on saving, but on what best to spend his allotted Tacoma money on.

    @igroves528 where are you located?

Asking these questions on the forum will get you a few things. Lots of differing opinions, lots of haters, and even more confusion.

Find some local members who will sit down and discuss your goals a little further to fit your needs.

Utilize your budget on things that will do more for you. You can get a roof rack for far less than 1k and most people don’t utilize them enough to justify spending that much on.

Same goes with the hard shell. You can buy quality used shells for half that price all day. I just opened up $1500 of your budget to put into a rear suspension kit that will support your desired weight a little better.

This is starting to read like a Dear Abby letter.

He just needs to go to 4Wheel parts after trading in the Tacoma in a Wrangler

Hey OP, well done paying off your house, truck, and saving most of your inheritance. I’d also consider keeping your wheels and using that savings of $1,000 to $1,200 on other stuff you want. I love the look of built Tacoma’s with stock wheels. I’m all for definitely upgrading suspension and tires but keeping the stock wheels.

    This^

If you are gonna add that much weight I deff wouldn't cheap out on the suspension...put the horse before the carriage.

If security isn't your main concern a Softopper will save a ton of weight and is more versatile. Obviously no rooftop tent, though.

Since you have some cash, I'd recommend looking into a Yakima overhaul HD paired with a ReTrax tonneau. You would still be able to use the rooftop tent and would also get secure weatherproofing for your gear.... much lighter weight with similar function.

    LS1 swap with nitros.
Most of the OP’s position is posted throughout the thread. House paid off, truck paid off, not 30 years old, and this is a small % of the inheritance.

I like how half of TW probably puts mods on credit but this dude with a paid off house, money invested, etc is getting financial advice.
