Love all of the nostalgia comments the Cybertruck has inspired. I suspect Mr Musk is a closet Dr Who fan. Cybermen...Cybertruck...hmm..

Anyways, here's why I'll be passing on this thing:

The truck is a fugly eye sore (which will likely grow on me as time goes by and cataracts get thicker). Still, there are a tech few issues that will make me eye-roll, and pass on anything with electric in the description related to cars.

First, the decreased distance with towing. That's already been noted here on previous pages, so I'll not bore anyone further with this one.

Second: sky high cost of motor replacement/failures. Which would make this a very non-field serviceable truck. I'm sure that branch that catches the lower parts of the truck while cruising through the trails can and will cause disabling damage.

Third: no user serviceable (very expensive) parts, so good luck getting Tesla replacing that motor you burned while tearing up the trails.

Fourth: someone mentioned 250 miles would be good for going out in remote areas with the base midel, but... you better not do this in colder areas, nor in higher elevations where temps are likely to drop, since the batteries will most definitely lose a shit load of capacity in these regions, likely leaving you stuck. I've not heard alot of Teslas with this issue, but don't see many people drive these vehicles when the snow is blowing. I work for a utility company that has for the past 15 years had tried many electric vehicle and truck solutions, and inevitably, the batteries fail to keep or store enough charge to go anywhere near even half their rated distances during winter. This gets even worse when you use heaters and such, which causes the batteries to discharge much more rapidly as well.

Me, I'll stay with a conventional gas or diesel powered engine until the batteries perform in all conditions I use my vehicles in, haven't seen much in the way of breaking news on this front thiugh.

But who knows...every time I look at the thing, it gets just a little bit less disturbing to look at...maybe, this is some sort of hypnosis that is being perpetuated on the masses...look at the angry triangle.. look de-e-eply...your eyes are getting heavy... ... ...

Um that's every truck. My Taco goes from 20mpg to 15 while towing a car.

Multi motors should mean that even if one is disabled, you can still get home in a limp mode. Kinda like if the front/rear diffs go.

Sure. Okay for a day trip truck, not okay for an expedition. I'm counting on maybe half the range to leave a good cushion. Maybe pack along a genset or extra solar. That said, could be okay for a day run (depending on your needs and where 500 miles from nearest charging gets you) and a commuter.

I pre-ordered. 500 mile range is better than my Tacoma. 6.5 bed is sufficiant for my uses.

There are definitly some downsides to electric, but I think the positives outweigh them. I am not a huge fan of the styling, but that is not my biggest consideration. Tesla has been a disrupting company with their technologies, and i think this is another step in that direction. They dont always come through on all of their claims, but they meet the majority of them.

1 - There’s no way I’m reading 17 pages discussing that ugly ass truck
2 - Guarantee you’ll never see the truck available under $40. The super hyped model 3 was never sold at the advertised price of $30. Right now the cheapest available is $40.
3 - Repair parts are not available. Here in the Bay Area repair times at body shops on Tesla’s are 6-9 months.

    1) 'k.
    2) You can call and get the stripper model 3 for 35k. SR+ isn't that much pricier.
    3) Yeah, that's what happens with new vehicles that are production constrained.

Most amazing vehicle I've ever seen. Been watching videos about it since it came out. This may be a game changer. Very beautiful design. There's a functional reason why it looks that way. I think people are saying it has to do with the type of metal they're using. At first I didn't think they could do it, after seeing the Rivian and how amazing it is I couldn't see how Tesla could come close to that. Thought Tesla didn't have the truck mentality like Rivian, but I think I was wrong. I think Tesla hit it out of the park with this one. Makes perfect sense in hindsight. Musk is making space ships and rockets that land. This is not just a truck body on battery, which I thought would be what they would do. This is a unique, amazing, functional redesign. Comes with all these things built in that you don't normally get with other trucks, including generator, air compressor, tonneau cover, solar panel maybe, some bullet proofing, dent resistant, glass break resistant, faster than any Porsche in production if I understand, etc. Strong body that doesn't dent makes perfect sense for any vehicle, especially a truck. So many things about it. Some people mentioned some disadvantages compared to regular trucks, which I assume there must be. Time will tell I guess. This video I think sums it up very well, the reviewer seems like a smart guy, saw another video from him that impressed me:

No. Can't afford it at this time. Also, with new things there tends to be kinks at the begining. But it's such an amazing vehicle that if I could afford it I would consider being one of the first buyers.

for those wondering about the curious boxy design, the cybertruck is unibody, just like the ridgeline.

But didn't honda still manage to not have its truck look like a brick? Yes they did, but contrary to the ridgeline, the cybertruck is electric and the batteries are integrated into the unibody structure, which also acts as protection for the battery. What about model 3, it's unibody and doesn't look blocky either. Well, a vehicle body naturally wants to twist, due to the different stresses put on the car (be it from the road, load or whatever). This is especially the case on pickup trucks. On body-on-frame designs, the frame absorbs most of the stress, but when you are a unibody truck, you need the famous "sail pillars". These correspond to the A and C/D pillars on cars. The second generation of ridgeline does not have these "sail pillars" anymore because they did integrate a frame-like structure into the unibody structure

But despite all this, the ridgeline does not look as boxy but then, tesla did go with a minimalist design

As much as I love my TRD Pro I have never been as excited to purchase a vehicle as much as the Tesla Cybertruck (placed my deposit last week). I realistically don’t expect to take delivery until late 2022. I am simply enamored with the angled styling, unibody construction, ultra hard SS body, 6.5 foot usable bed, built in air compressor, standard rolling bed cover, Armor Glass transparent roof and side windows, seats 6 adults, no old school combustion engine/transmission/complexity, minimum 250 all electric range, etc. Tesla is basically building my dream pickup truck.

2 - Go on Tesla’s website. Model 3 starts at almost $40. That’s the base model
3 - Model S came out in 2012. After 7 years of production you shouldn’t expect body or mechanical parts to be available?

Having said that, I’m glad there’s someone pushing the boundaries of design and technology. Whether or not it looks like I drew it left handed on a bar napkin while drunk it will force all manufacturers to re-evaluate their platforms.

The Model S was an auto industry game changer that caught all of the luxury brands with their pants down. We still don’t see any direct competition in the marketplace. The base model Taycan will start at $105k before adding options. That’s $25k more than a new Model S.

The more I look at it and watch videos, the more excited I am. I cant wait to actually drive one. If the tacoma came with an electric drivetrain with decent range, I would be all over it. But, from what other manufacturers are actually putting to market, Tesla is 5 years ahead at least. 3 more years, then no more ridiculous shifting and 4.5K RPM up passes at 50mph for this guy. Zero shifting, instantaneous torque and 400 miles without charging sounds like a dream.
