Nope, open the "trunk" lid and stand the tree upright. A few straps to keep it from falling over and done.

OP, just bring your tree stand and mount the tree to the stand vertically just like at the house. You save time by doing it at the point of purchase and won't need your tailgate down.
Avoid low clearance bridges, drive through fast food joints and remember to add water plus one aspirin to the tree base for long life.
See problem solved. TW always has the answer. :)

Pretty sure the RL tailgate folds down too. Just another way it's a superior truck.

    Googled it...

The dual-action tailgate that comes standard on the 2017 Honda Ridgeline can either fold down like a traditional pickup's tailgate, or it can open outward on the driver's side more like a door. This can make it easier to load the pickup bed with cargo.

Fuck Yeah! And then continue to lurk and tell everyone how it was the best decision ever and how happy you are and what a superior machine it is! And get all pissy when people ask why you're still here.

It's hard on the support cables and anchor posts, especially if it bounces. I've done it with 8' lumber, but spread out and not loaded to the top, and on good roads. SFSG

We won a beautiful fully decorated Christmas tree one time and I hauled it standing up with the decorations on in the bed . I had the sliding rear window open and my friend hung out it holding the tree about half way up .

Just drove from Norfolk, Va. to southern Ohio with tailgate down. No problem.

I haul stuff w/ tailgate down all the time no issues... Sort of a necessity with a 5ft bed lol

I do have mudflaps tho so maybe that deters things kicking up a bit.
