NEED HELP Bilstein 5100 With 886 Or 888 lift coils On 3rd gen with stock bumper

Hello everyone,

This is my first post ever and I've seen a lot of Bilstein 5100 with the 888 coils going around. One thing I have noticed is that people say that the 888 coils start to sag over time. I was literally about to buy the 888 coils and said to my self maybe I should just post something on here and learn from people's mistakes. I have a 2018 Tacoma Trd Off-Road and already ordered the AAL and the 5100's on black Friday yesterday. I am planning to off-road it of course with some buddy's nothing too crazy from time to time. I do not plan to add a front bumper at all so and I realize the 886 coils are made to pair with a bumper/winch and also if I bought these coils without a bumper would they be stiff as hell? And the correct coils to buy would prob be the 888 coils but there has been reported sagging. Oh and btw I'm looking for a 2.75-3 inch lift don't have money for UCA's and I realize the alignment won't be perfect and I'm ok with that. And if you were wondering also I got method 305 16" and planning to add 285/75/16 the backspacing for the rims is 4.5 with a 0mm offset so should work with some trimming but idk this stuff is stressful and is new to me but I'm more worried about what coils to buy.

I ran the 2888 coils and they sagged about 3/4” over a year, but that is with a bumper.

The max lift you will get out of the Bilstein with OME coils is 2-2.5” (that is a solid lift) depending on how much front weight you run. The ideal lift height for the 3rd gen Tacoma is 2-2.5” because they sit 1” taller than the 2nd gen from the factory. If you go the full 3” your CVs will experience more stress over time and that isn’t very fun to fix or repair.

If you want a solid coil that won’t sag (without bumper/winch) go get 600-650# Eibach coils.

Ok So if I get these coils would I set the 5100's to 0 and then get a 2-inch lift from the coils and I'm chill with the ride being a little stiff. And also I got the skyjacker Softride AAL that lifts it 2.5-3 not sure if that's true but should I call them before they ship it and get a 1.5-2 lift AAL? If so, suggestions?

 

Sounds like you did your homework and know all the answers. Based on other people’s reports and experiences 888s w/5100s should work fine. You understand the limitations of 888s and the differences with going to 886s. It sounds like you are going with highest pre-load setting if you plan to run 285s. The issues I see with 285s is:

1) You should definitely add UCAs to your list, otherwise I’m pretty sure you will rub.
2) You should probably do the ECGS bushing if you lift that high
3) You most likely will notice a power loss on grades and when towing with 285s. That’s probably gonna make you want gears.
4) You still might need a CMC with 285s

You might consider 265/75/R16s

 

The 886s being made for trucks with aftermarket front bumpers isn't true for the 2016 Tacoma and newer. Our trucks are 400 pounds heavier than the 2nd gen Tacoma. OME just updated their shit to say that the 2nd gen OME coils will work with the 3rd gen so they wouldn't have to do anything money wise. Technically they fit on the 3rd gen but have a high chance of failing under the extra weight and sagging. I'm on 888s and love the ride quality but also have 1/2" spacer on my driver side for an extra 1" lift and 1/4" spacer on the passenger side for a 1/2" lift on that side and leveled side to side ride height. Very happy with the setup. I have exactly 2.5"s of lift in the front WITH the spacers on top the 888/5100 combo.

This picture is what 2.5" front and 2.5" rear lift looks like with 265/70/17 tires. Maintained 1" stock rake.

 

Ok, this is very helpful thanks, guys. I will honestly prob go with the 888 coils a lot of people seem to have them. Now I just need to figure out if my Skyjacker soft ride AAL I just ordered is going to be too much because it says it's a 2.5-3inch lift.

 

And one more thing I have to ask you should I do the same spacer set up as you from the BEGINNING? Or should I wait to notice a sag and then ADD the Spacers like you did. Thanks!

 

Why wouldn't you get ones that don't sag?

 

Yeah true but everyone seems to be running these 888 coils and it lifts it higher than 2.0 inches and that's what I'm looking for. Some people get more of the sag some people don't it seems like a hit or miss but if I get it I will add the spacers like Dr.Emmett did and it worked out especially because I won't be running any extra weight in the front of my truck I think it will be fine.

 

Yeah, this definitely is a potential with the 285's but they just make it look soooo nice. I don't plan on really towing anything so that shouldn't be much of an issue. I will keep this updated and let you know when I finish all this on my truck and send a before and after pic if I remember.

 

So you're planning 285's and no cutting or UCA's?

 

No, I will expect to do some cutting but I can't afford UCA's

 

888 5100 is what I run. Pretty happy except for stiff ride.

 

That looks SOOO sick how long have you had it for and did it sag a lot and do you suggest I run the 888 coils as well I don't really care for a stiff ride if it makes the truck look that cool. And also what size tires are those?

 

I’ve been very happy with the almost exact setup you said and have done some major wheeling. But... you’re right, the 888’s will sag. I almost got 886’s back when I did it because of your exact train of thought but I still went 888’s. At first, the 888’s looked amazing, like perfect lift height but over time they sagged and it’s been a year this week since I put them on my 2019 OR and it still looks nice but not as much as before.

 

10k miles. It started nose high and settled in. Didn't notice any significant sagging.

Ok, this is good info to know since you've done this before if you went back in time would you have put the 886 coils on or just kept the 888 coils? And should I fit the 285's on it or will that be bad when they sag? What size tires do you have also.

 

The 2888’s are a 590# coil. The stock coil on the OR is 700#. Do the math...you will sag over time

 

Yup definitely wait till they sag. I would advise just getting 886s from the beginning. If you don't like the ride then it's a good excuse for some useless steel on the front of your truck
If ou add spacers from the beginning you may end up lifting it a crazy amount initially even if it does settle later.
