Questions post accumulator delete

Said goodbye to the clutch accumulator today.

First impressions after bleeding the clutch and test driving is the pedal effort feels different than before. Bled with tube until no air bubbles, test drove, then bled again, test drove again.

My question is:

After the ADM, does your clutch pedal feel noticeably different? Pedal effort feels much lighter in the top half of the pedal travel almost like the only resistance is the big ass return spring... then the pedal effort firms up during the bottom half of the pedal travel.

I visually confirmed the clutch slave moved almost immediately when my wife barely pressed the clutch. Of course there is slight pedal free play as normal, and the pedal height is 7 inches from the floorboard sheetmetal (within spec). The push rod moves right after the pedal free play is pushed in.

After driving a second time, the truck goes into every gear just fine and actually shifts very good. I'm able to shift between gears faster and smoother with less drama even at lower rpms. Up-shifts (especially 1-2 when cold) are much improved. Downshifts are smoother with easier rev matching and ability to slip the clutch when the revs don't match perfectly.

So now you're asking if it's great then what's the problem, right?!

Well, the damn pedal just feels weird. Lol. First half of travel very light, bottom half of travel is firm like "normal."

Thoughts on all this? I can honestly say the truck shifts better between all gears, I just might need to get used to the pedal again?

 

im in the same boat as you...I will say that i no longer get that delayed thump of what I thought was the delayed clutch engagement

 

What boat are we in? One that floats I hope.

What delayed thump exactly? It does make some noise, but whatcha mean?

 

That accumulator would delay the engadgement and make a thump, made me crazy

 

Since I have the parts waiting for install....

 

I’ve thought about installing this, but I have no issues with my clutch, actually love it, smooth fast shifts. Don’t know why owners dislike the stock clutch. I actually think it’s a lot smoother and better than my 1st Gen.

 

I'm gonna need you to explain more on the thump like when. Lol.

So is your pedal feeling the way I described after the ADM?

 

I got used to it, but I had trouble shifting quickly from 1-2 especially at low rpms or when cold. I would need to rev to 3k in 1st, stomp the clutch, wait a sec, then shift into 2nd to get a smooth shift. And as you know this truck ain't fast. I was not keeping up with the flow of traffic.

I was also getting inconsistent notchy shifts into 2nd and 3rd sometimes although smooth mostly when warmed up. I also tended to get alot of bucking, rah rah rah, after shifting into second quickly to try to keep up with traffic. All that seems to have been much improved after the ADM, it's just the pedal feels weird to me now because the effort is different.

Feels like all of the clutch modulation happens at the bottom half of the pedal travel only. Anyone else?

 

Shoulda bought an Auto. My clutch works effortlessly.

Hey now......we AT people have to put up with the “my truck shifts perfect......shoulda bought an MT” in every thread.

 

I’m running Redline MT90 which helps since it’s full synthetic. I know it doesn’t effect the pedal, but I’m a huge fan.

 

is this like the delay valve delete on a manual BMW?

Yes, and I used to own a 2008 335i coupe 6MT that I also deleted that part on. It was great after that.

Youre the only one ive heard with this experience OP. You sure you bled all of the air out?

 

Yeah, not my first time bleeding a hydraulic system. I used a small hose and bled until no more air bubbles appeared in the fluid in my glass jar, then I bled some more for good measure. Drove it around the block, then bled it again.

The clutch operation works great actually. No problems. It's just the pedal feels different. Before it had more resistance in the top half of the pedal stroke. After it seems like the first half of pedal travel is very light as if the only resistance is from the return spring, then it firms up at the bottom half.

I got under the truck and popped the cover on the inspection window. Had my wife press the clutch at varying degrees. Besides the normal pedal free play, the slave is moving the fork even if the pedal is barely pressed...so it's working normally.

I think I'm just losing my mind about how the pedal feels? Maybe im having a mid life crisis . I'm getting used to it. The pedal, not the crisis.
