Oil change with stuck filter

    Hi all,
    Well I went to change the oil on my 2018 with 9 k miles. Oh boy why does toyota hate me?

    The skid plate bolt on the front was rounding so I removed the plastic air dam to get at it better. First problem solved.

    The filter is either over torqued or I just can't get the leverage on it laying on my back. thought about jacking it up but I am just about to give up. Fill it up with oil and bring it some where.

    What a poor design for home DIY.

    Yup. Maybe just do it with a impact drive. But I'd buy the metal replacement ahead of time because they are over torqued from factory. Some have broken theirs.

    Any idea how the skid plate got rounded - was it the OEM skid plate? I'd start by resolving that - either if done by Toyota, a third-party, or yourself. Yes, if already drained fill it with fresh oil and go about fixing the main problem.

    Breaker bar and a pipe cheater is what I had to do. Unbelievable. I also switched to a metal filter along with a FUMOTO.

    It's messy but I've used a big flathead screwdriver and punctured it all the way through the top part (closest to where it attaches to the motor) of the filter then grab each side of the flathead and twist. When you reinstall the new filter oil the ever living shit out of the gasket and only hand tighten. I've never had an issue in 20 years of oil changing with this method.

    $13 LIAMTU Aluminum Cup Wrench for Removing Toyota Oil Filter Caps, 64mm Flute, Fits 2.5L to 5.7L Engines, Black
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BHHN7S2/ coupled with a 3/8 drive breaker bar or long ratchet did the trick for me.

    Because of the seal drag, the filter will be tight the 5 full turns on its way out (and in). You'll need to push up on the filter wrench cup and use a ratchet.

    Its better that what I got, I still might have to jack it up. I think main problem is it is over torqued.

    I think the plastic canister would just shatter if you tried to drive a screwdriver thru it, the only way to get these things off is with the correct tool.
