Little did we know that morning Spotter Jim received his first ipod shuffle from his daughter as a gift. While in the middle of that run his favorite YMCA tunes came on and couldn't fight the urge to bust a move....the rest is history.

 thanks for your kind words - I think there are a couple of points - Just like teaching people to ski - Husband shouldn't teach wife. The relationship and the assumptions will mess you up EVERYTIME (almost).

The other is the amount of coaching to the person BEFORE they start down the hill.

The third is a standardized verbal and hand signals - Simplify EVERYTHING.

Simple mistakes can cause death or destruction ...

and yes that Jeep does still look good after that roll! :)

One thing I often do on tough and/or dangerous passes is get out of the truck, go see for myself and discuss it with my spotter. Maybe it's just me but I think I should have a say on how we're gonna try not to break my neck.

And when the two know exactly what's the plan it makes the spotter's instructions crystal clear because you know what's coming.

But then..........the people I'd trust for spotting would never make me turn my wheels up-hill when I'm sideways.

I think it got to the point where he was like "Well she's fucked. I'm going to try to convince her to get as far away from me from possible."

One of the best ways is to be trained by a professional... Bill Burke is one of the finest! It will be the best money you ever spent if you plan of off roading. They are typically multi-day events to some of the best spots to wheel. Moab is a place he holds classes/schools.

It is better than any mod you will contemplate and it will help you help your friends.
    :)

I was a test driver for GM Desert Proving Grounds for a while and they too provide some great training - the only problem is that you have to work for them! ;)

I concur with this. While not a friend or associate of Bill Burke's I can say that the short time I was able to listen to him speak I could tell that not only was he well versed in the subject matter but he also has that type of personality that allows him to be able to relate to everyone and be able to explain even the most complex process to pretty much anyone and get the message across. If a group buy was put together for his DVD's I'd pony up as it would be a good excuse to support him as well as make for a great Christmas gift for a friend of mine that is new to wheeling.

And back to the epileptic spotter issue. Others mentioned getting together with their spotter prior to making their attack and that is quite literally one of the smartest things you could do. Having spent time in advance sorting out the details of what the different signals mean and taking a moment to personally survey the trail yourself before hitting the ignition switch will make the event safer, more enjoyable, and easier to explain to your insurance provider afterward.

Oh I agree 100% , as the driver I routinely will get out & re-evaluate my chosen line of approach & make sure the spotter & myself are on the same page, but nothing is written in stone when wheeling if an obstacle is approached & if I see something I didn't before of course I'm going to get spotters attention & vice-versa.

I'm inclined to agree with you about most drivers though... Oh well it is what it is, 2 people who were in way over their heads. I don't really think the ignorance is exclusive to Californication......

I don't know what intense parking lot curb you speak of.......OK
Jake haha that is kinda funny...

I'm no expert, but here's how I see it:

Beyond some of the more obvious fails, the big failing point is at 1:44. Spotter says don't turn passenger, and points passenger. The driver focuses on the hands and obliges to turn passenger.

    Mixed messages = roll.

    It didn't help that:
-the hand signals were frantic (makes driver nervous)
-If there's a set of several orchestrated moves, the spotter should probably stop the driver and talk them over before carrying them through
-Spotter/driver should stop all actions if the spotter is out of sight or is finding a new place to stand (in this case because he's tripping )

I'd like to say the spotter should have stopped the driver at 1:50 where it's clear the driver is not following direction, but the driver seemed to not get the message "hey this is bad" and gave it gas.

There was one earlier this year (I got mine!). Haven't had a chance to watch them... I haven't even got time to wheel since owning them :p Corrections should be made.

Besides the obvious spotter/driver incompetence displayed, this video also highlights the need for emergency medical care on the trail. Get trained, get the gear, it could save someone's life.

    Insurance, or debt!

I wish I could! I'm still paying off my medivac ride from a couple years ago! I didn't have insurance at the time :(

Someone needs to break the "spotter's" legs so he doesn't show up on another trail...
