I had rock hit my windshield on my 2019 Tacoma, ended up with a huge crack. My local dealer in TX outsources the windshield replacement to a shop here in Houston. I had them replace the windshield and it immediately starting throwing codes...Lane Departure, High beam auto, and the pre-collision (which had nothing to do with the camera/windshield). I took it to the Toyota dealership to re-calibrate. After 6 hours, with no success, they told me to take it back to company that did the replacement, as they assumed they installed the camera wrong. The windshield company came out an tinkered with it for a few hours and said the camera mount was a little loose, but that was all they could find that could possibly be wrong. Went back to Toyota to re-calibrate to no avail, still throwing codes. The dealership is now saying I have to replace the new aftermarket windshield (what they recommended I do and the shop as well) with a Genuine Toyota windshield, take the lift off the truck, put stock tire size back on and and put the stock grill back on, and then they will re-calibrate to get the codes fixed. I had already had the pre-collision recall done and never had any issue with before or after until now. I told the guy there that this is ridiculous, since before the replacement of the windshield it never threw a single code and it is now throwing codes that have nothing to do with the windshield + the ones that could be expected. He said that this what the Toyota engineers told them to do at HQ and until I did the above it was my problem.

    Any recommendations here?

Needless to say, I sold the stock grille & wheels/tires, it has already cost me $500 for a new windshield and now they want another ~$750 +$250 for the "final" re-calibration and windshield, not sure all this is worth it unless I want to drive with the codes flashing all the time. Plus I still need to buy a stock grille, tires and then take the time to pull the lift off and then put it back on.

Dunno if you have glass coverage but my insurance company is handling a whole mess of bullshit right now for me because the installer fucked up my windshield replacement - including dealership recalibration costs despite the dealership not doing the installation. Might want to get them involved if you do.

The calibration parameters are set for a truck in stock form. They may be having problems doing it with aftermarket parts.
I know there was one dealer near me that lifted quite a few 2016 and 2017 trucks before they sold them, then when TSS was put in them in 2018, they quit doing that and sell them all in stock form.
Maybe they could just disable the whole system for you, if that is possible?

Make sure the camera is not obstructed by the black surround on the windshield.

Some replacement windows don't come with the camera heater and the shops don't reconnect it. Causing a code.

So glad my 2015 doesn’t have all that bullshit tech on it. What a pain. Sucks you have to deal with that.

All this tech on these 2018 and up trucks sounds like a nightmare when not working . I just wonder what they will be like with 100,000 miles on the trucks .

I asked them too and was told they would not due to liability reasons.

Yeah, if i had known all this could happen I would have bought a low mileage 2017 instead.

Liability? Toyota provided buttons to turn the stuff off. All the dealer would be doing is setting the program to stay off with each key cycle.

I agree 100% with you. He was adamant though that they would not turn them off completely. Needless to say, I'll have to work higher up on the food chain the assistant service manager, if I have to go that route.

Wishing you the best, but I’m pretty confident that you could talk to your best friend the CEO of Toyota and they won’t permanently disable anything. It is a liability to them and they have no incentive to do it. If the car was then involved in an accident, you (or your estate if you were dead) could sue them. And they would say “but the dead guy asked us to disable it, promise”. Other scenario is they disable for you, you sell it to someone else who assumes it works and the same cycle happens, accident, lawsuit etc. While clearly not as important, it’s similar to asking the dealer to remove the seatbelts or airbags, aka not a chance they will do it.
    Sorry to be a pessimist.
My suggestion would actually be the opposite. Don’t go higher up the food chain, go lower. Higher ups will respect the rules and consult the lawyers. No service managers or senior people. Find someone young and inexperienced enough to not realize this is a liability to them and see if they’ll do it.

Insurance appraiser by trade. I will tell you I have had this issue on several vehicles when the windshields were replaced with aftermarket glass. I would try to get the glass company to credit the cost back on the aftermarket glass and go ahead and put OEM glass in the truck....

This is incorrect btw. In fact in the safety campaign if you are lifted/non stock tires/non stock grill they are technically required to disable it. By disable I mean go into techstream as noted here
All they are doing is turning off the auto on setting. You can turn it all off via buttons on the truck as it is now (yes warning/off lights will show on the dash to indicate off) BUT every time you turn off then on everything is back on. They are only changing that auto on to off (basically saving your “settings”)

I have no issues asking my dealer to change settings in techstream (in fact 3-4 seperate occasions) and lucky me not charge me. 1 of those times I had them change this very setting. And then they did the safety campaign no issues with non stock grill.

Also nowhere near the same as asking to remove airbags or seatbelts. Oh yea the dealer turned off the seatbelt chime no problem either. Some dealers seem to hide behind the “not allowed “ excuse but it’s all listed in the manual as a changeable setting. If it was intended to never be changed the setting to do so would not be there
