    I agree. $5.00 × 100,000 Tacoma's. That adds up!

Sounds legit, except if that were the absolute truth, why wouldn't Toyota use the plastic cap on the Sienna also?

    To, you know, save $5...

My problem too, but i usually stop at the draining step and do something else. Come back and put everything together. then check the oil a few times toping it off. So it can be a while. I have been changing my own oil for 40 years must have only had a handful of filters I need to get out the wench.

I have it fairly good authority (local independent Toyota mechanic plus our own company mechanic who worked for TEC) that there were known thread galling issues with these aluminum housings which is why they switched to plastic. According to the Toyota mechanic, this was a fairly well known issue that dealer techs were notified about.

This is the 3rd Gen subforum of Tacoma World. It's a matter of time before someone has this issue and everyone freaks out.

Not necessarily, stick around and read below.

"Car mfg is very cut-throat." yes it is

However, It’s not always about saving money, but lets make no mistake here, it is very important and every one’s doing it. They have to, mostly because the market (us) demand it.
But there are other reasons other than just saving money.

    Hint:
The Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards are regulations in the United States

Both T4R and Tacoma have the plastic caps. Both are built on heavy truck chassis and every once of weight savings here & there count in achieving those better fleet fuel numbers.

I’m not at all surprised, I mean if you over-torque aluminum, it’s a bad thing and we know how king kong loves doing it when he tightens the filters. I’m going on almost four years now and 10 filter changes, no issues.

Moral of the story, let us not be that guy, use torque wrench specs if you need to and you won’t have an issue.

You guys actually torque the oil filter cap? I just turn the ratchet until the cap flange bottoms on the housing lip. There's so much seal drag it can't loosen.

The torque specs are provided for the benefit of king kong, everyone else just carry on.

Now if we could just teach kong how to read hum…

Use an air ratchet or 1/4" impact driver and you will have it off in 2 minutes.

On my 2012 cummins, I had a coupon for a free 30k service, this included changing the fuel filter. The 2012s had only one - under the hood.

I had performed the 15k service, and barely went beyond hand tightening.

At the 45k filter service, I could not get the damn thing off. Our company mechanic could also not budge it.

We drove it to the Ram dealer and I let our mechanic do the talking. Long story short, the dealer was torquing it to spec...but their torque wrench was improperly calibrated. The tech was fairly clueless on how often it should be calibrated, how to test it, etc. The regular cummins mechanics at the shop had their shit calibrated on a regular schedule, the techs....nope.

Bottom line is this: there are some things that need to be torqued, and some where I’d argue it’s optional. The filter housing is optional...it’s hard enough to back it off when it’s just past hand tight, even more so when torqued correctly and you might as well forget about it if the wrench is not properly calibrated and it’s over torqued.

Oftentimes the guys doing the filter changes are not the real mechanics....and as such they will crank the shit out if things. Keep that in mind.

It's just an oil filter housing, no big deal. Crazy would be making a gun out of plastic.
