Hi there I'm new to the forum. I apologize if this has been posted before however I did search but no answers.

I recently purchased a 2017 TRD 4x4 Sport (automatic) . At the time of the purchase the truck had 19100 and I put on a little less than 800 miles on it.

I've been driving in 2WD for the whole time. A couple of days ago I decided to try out the 4H. I was in park and turned the nob to 4H. I waited for the 4x4 to engage. I proceeded to go in reverse and it felt like I had my parking brake half on??? Coming to the edge of the driveway the truck stopped I gave it some gas and the back wheels spun a bit and felt slight jerks! I then proceeded to drive (4H) down the street to a nearby parking lot and try reverse on flat ground. Getting to the parking lot I didn't notice any issues but when I tired going in reverse it would do the same thing. Is this normal for 4x4 or something I should be concerned about?

    Thanks

I have a 2019 Sport TRD 4X4 that does the same thing in reverse. I understand this is not unusual. Keep it in 2WD when moving in reverse.

Your not supposed to use 4WD on pavement.

First you should learn about 4WD systems

You can get the 2WD low mod, works great in reverse too

Don’t feel bad, I learned myself through trial and error. I’ve never used 4wd on pavement ever as it’s not needed. One day decided to get some ‘lubrication miles’ on it and threw it in 4 high. Upon turning into a parking lot from a 90 degree turn the truck acted like something was screwed up and causing it to not move. That was when I learned my lesson on 4wd on pavement.

Anyway I also learned that you can drive on pavement with 4wd engaged just don’t make sharp turns. Going around average corners no huge deal but sharp turns aren’t good, stay away from em :)

There's no reason you can't use 4wd in reverse, it works the same both ways, there's nothing problematic about going backward in 4wd. I use 4hi and 4lo in reverse all the time without issue. It sounds like the OP was doing it on pavement probably while trying to turn, which is what caused the binding
