I have a 2016 Tacoma and when I put it in 4WD I get a jerky movement when turning in a parking lot or drive way when there is too much traction. I understand I need to get used to this vehicle but I want to be sure there is not another mode I might be missing to put the truck in to prevent this. My last vehicle was a 2007 4Runner and, by default, was not in this kind of traction mode.

I use 4 Hi only when I feel the tires slip (like in ice or snow). The Owners manual says to exercise 4WD once per month. For this I drive a few miles on a straight road after a first rain (when the roads tend to be slick).

You are going to bind up your truck's transmission tighter than prom night. You are 100% going to do expensive damage. Stop doing that!

When your truck is in 4X4, the front and rear drive shafts turn at the same speed. They are locked together inside the transfer case, there is no differential action between them. Now, think about how far the front end of your truck has to travel when making a turn as compared to the ass end. Since the drive shafts are turning at the same rate, something has to slip (your tires). If you're on a high traction surface, well nothing wants to slip. That jerky feeling is your drivetrain binding up.

    I'm guessing you had a V8 with full-time 4WD?

    From the owners manual:

●For normal driving on dry and hard surface roads, use “2WD” position. Driving on dry and hard surface roads in “4H” or “4L” position may cause drive component oil leakage, seizure, or other problems resulting in an accident. Further, it may cause tire wear and increased fuel consumption.

●Avoid turning suddenly in “4H” or “4L” position. If you do turn suddenly, the difference in turning speeds between the front and rear wheels may have a similar effect to braking, thus making driving difficult.

..and what the guy who Is Not The Ginger said.....

If you read the manual you wouldn't be so dependent on other people. Seeing as you are posting and responding on here I'll assume you can read. Don't like the answers? Go read the manual....

You'd be surprised how often the same questions get asked, over and over.

Also, it's Monday and everyone is grumpy after having had too much turkey. Don't sweat it.

    Yeah.
Many people forget that there was a time when they didn't know how the 4WD system worked. You will meet them all here. Enjoy your truck!

Oh come on. Don't be thin skinned. You asked a question that has a brutally obvious answer for most "truck people". Not everyone knows this though....or you wouldn't have posted the question.

As the truck market continues to expand more and more non truck people join the fold with little to no understanding of the ins and outs of truck ownership. It's a trend I've certainly seen in the nearly 11 years I've been on this site.

So don't go. Between TW and your owner's manual there's lots of info to be had.

    Hang around

I too like to occasionally exercise the system, but did not know the manual suggested once per month. Good to know.

I didn’t know that either. Good info for people. Thankful I go trail ride as often as I possibly can because I’m addicted to 4x4 driving.
