I know the OEM remote starter on the 2020 Tacoma’s requires an $80 yearly subscription after the first year.

Free the first year, then 4G/LTE speed at $39.99 a YEAR (NOT MONTH) there after. Doesn't go up or down. No contracts, renew yearly as you please with a 3 year renewal option at $99 (Saves you $20). Some insurance companies have been known to discount up to $15/month for having a GPS tracking device. That pays for the device in a year, and covers more than the annual subscription after the first year there after. Worth looking into.

And for the record OEM is actually $8/MONTH, so $96 a year.

 

Ordered! Hope it's easy to install in a highlander as well. Video for tacoma install looks easy so I imagine both will be easy. Snow coming Sunday night so I'll be cold in the truck one last snowstorm and never again!

TLDR: Regular remote start, not so bad. Cell phone remote start, terrible. The attack is too sophisticated attack for a regular joe but not too hard for an ethical hacker.

Cool story...where do I begin...

1) The type of person capable of this isn't the type of demographic found in prison for auto theft, or one that NEEDS to steal cars and chop shop part out your vehicle to make a living. Likely makes a great living applying his mind at a well paying job.
2) People like this do it FOR FUN, as a CHALLENGE, to prove they CAN. They see it as a hobby.
3) The average street thug/thief has no idea, even with this video how to use serial protocol commands to do half what this guy was doing. Those guys aren't busting laptops out or following YouTube guides on how to do this. It takes too much time, they want the path of least resistance, so they'll stick to their old ways. Also, because again, they don't have DEFCON IQ.
4) If someone wants your car THAT bad, they deserve it. However, again, guys like these aren't in the market to steal cars. It's easier for them to exploit a list of credit cards from a Walmart database, and either use them or sell them. they are phantoms behind a computer that can cleverly cover up and trace leading back to them. A car thief can be pulled over.
5) That's what insurance is for.
6) Give me one example this has been applied successfully.
7) $1,000 to the first victim of $h|+ like this.
8) I'll take a cool vehicle in the summer, warm one in the winter and take my chances. I think lighting will hit me before this could ever happen.
9) One has to know you have this device, then intercept the bypass code transmitted over serial protocol. Car thief has to pull a lawn chair and a laptop, correct software, and then create his own app or figure out your credentials (which are encrypted).
10) This is a controlled environment, meaning this video does not apply to the real world at all because HE CREATED the setup so HE COULD ACCESS IT. Again, for fun.
11) You should also delete any transactions, saved credit cards and so on for any online retailer you've ever transacted with as that's alot easier to hack, and exploit, as well as do some serious credit damage. Shield your chipped Credit Cards, put foil around your home, and disconnect and internet access you have in your home from the outside world.
12) No one is out to get you, but if they do, some see me for your $1,000.
13) If this worries you that much, don't buy it.

And finally...I love how these guys can hack, but at minute marker 11:20 can't get a video to play with audio. Priceless!

 

Correct on all points. This wasn't a personal attack or an attack on your product. IT security is something I take seriously and am in the process of learning as part of my profession. The intended purpose for coming back here and posting this video was not to stir up some shit, but rather to inform people that the developers of these applications, remote starters, and OEM vehicle security do not place security as their top priority.

It is important to me that a device I install on my vehicle isn't leaving a gaping hole for someone to walk up and steal my firearm, my dog, or whatever by opening the door. I am thankful that this ethical hacker was able to demonstrate the Fortin device's strengths and weaknesses and responsibly disclosed the vulnerabilities he found to the cell phone app developer. It also confirmed that if you have only the key fob module installed you are not as much at the mercy of lazy or ignorant developers.

I hope everyone who's reading this is better informed by watching the video and can thank the ethical hacker for making these devices more secure in the long run from those who may have used these vulnerabilities for malicious purposes.

All that being said, I'm keeping your remote start kit installed.

 

Firmware updates possible to address the concern?

 

I can respect that, and this DEFCON talent.

However, why is it anymore important than something more feasible to the average (or slightly above average) thief that can steal your RF signal, copy it and unlock your vehicle? No remote start, no app, and no special firmware needed to decode the protocol or anything of the like? Seems that would be more feasible. And that affects us ALL (potentially). And that being said, even though that's much easier, how often has THAT even happened and who do you know that it has happened to? What you don't understand is that the likelihood of you PSA is not likely as opposed to someone with an RF scanning tool that can do it without a quarter of the work it takes to do this or expertise? I myself by degree, am a programmer/Comp Sci, electrical engineer, hacker, tinkerer and inventor at times so I get this, and also understand, it's not happening. The issue I have here is that, not everyone is in IT, networking, codes, etc..so you know what this does? Puts fear in people whom don't understand this was a science project that requires A LOT of brains to which my point is, those brains aren't on the streets stealing your stuff or vehicle...and that just sucks.

We should tell all manufacturers to stop making fobs, because our cars might get unlocked, and maybe stolen.
Don't use public WiFi to check your bank account.
Use a VPN tunnel when streaming bootleg flicks online.

I mean I can go on with things much more detrimental to our livelihood in terms of security...yes, this is no exception, but the amount of work for the payoff? Dude, I can smash your window quicker, take what I want and disappear faster than a laptop can boot up.

The chances of this happening? Being that guys neighbor, and asking him to do it.

I can post a video of someone getting hit by lightning to make people aware its "a real thing". People still won't stop being out during a storm walking to and from because the odds are so slim..."it just won't happen to me". Except I think the chances of lightning striking us is higher.

And I'm glad you're enjoying the N2 product. You're keeping it on because I think you agree with me on my latter statements. Being comfortable in the summer/winter are worth the chances (of something likely to never happen to you) than living in fear...anyways, thanks for sharing. I took some notes for a future mod/invention/hack idea. Won't say what, but NOT malicious, that's for sure!...

 

@N2DesignsInc and @trajiiic To post as a potential customer whenever the PTS SmartKey Solution becomes available for the 2020 Tacomas... I would love the internet connected LTE module, but after watching this video, I can no longer accept the risk associated with it. I will happily buy the standard module that leverages the factory FOB. If you're not concerned about the security implications, how can you dismiss the blatant violation of your privacy?

If nobody cares, there is no reason for these companies to stop their illegal behavior.

Spoke to the manufacturer, this is something they were aware of, even though the video posting is recent, this is a year old news that has since been fixed and patched...this guy used NON-updated hardware...real slick. Ask him to try it on current firmware...only tech people would get the illegitimacy of such a dirty demo like this.

So moving on.

The rain stopped us yesterday...attempting again Friday.

 

Has anyone noticed the remote start module making an electrical click noise while the truck is running? It’s not continuous- maybe a single click every thirty seconds or a minute. The only way I can replicate a similar sound is by turning the headlight switch from the DRL to Parking Lights position. There is a different sound that I recognize as normal when going in the reverse order.

Obviously I’m hypersensitive having just taken apart the dash, but I noticed this sound immediately when I drove for the first time. It is not a rattle or vibration, as I hear it at odd times while parked and motionless.

Any thoughts? Maybe it was there all along. I’m curious if anyone else has noticed this before I remove the trim panels again to do some testing.

Can someone at least tell me if there is an electrical click sound on stock trucks when moving the selector from the DRL to parking lights selection.

Are you sitting inside a parked car that's engine off and locked? Or idling? Our engines make that random click sound especially WHEN your heater or AC condenser is on...not a function of the remote starter whatsoever.

 

So we tested our 2020 again...so close. The car does everything but crank. We're tracing it back to the ignition portion. We're going to hit the drawing board and schematics and figure out why ans what's going on. The pin for pin seem to match function from our harness to OEM exactly like the 16-19 so this is a little baffling. Bear with is while we work to figure this out. This is a TOP priority for us. WE WILL GET IT DIALED IN. THAT'S A PROMISE. The problem with beta's is we don't want to take their vehicle's away for too long. Our guy today was a good sport, even though it was fruitless, we hooked him up with a MESO minimalist keyfob to match his car, a mobile hand held light bar and some $$$ for his hour and a half donated to us...and a cup of freshly brewed coffee! We're working on it!

 

The click I’m referring to originates to the lower left of the steering wheel, while the engine is idling or while driving. It sounds like a relay or micro-switch that may be integrated with the dash or parking lights. I agree that it is likely not coming from the remote start module, but I’d like to get more data and give you a call.

 

Successful install on a 2020 Hkey today. Works great! Remote module is the coolest and I’m so glad I got it. The video was critical. I imagine the paper instructions would be all an experienced installer would need, but not basic enough for what I would need. A pretty solid project for a first timer, but not a nightmare. Fiddling with the panels is prob the worst part. Beyond that, stripping the tpms wire probably the next most difficult part. It’s close quarters for a fat fingered dude. Proud of myself for getting it done, didn’t even need to bug Jimmy!
