You will see a much bigger boost in braking performance for less money by putting a BBK on the front of the truck compared to a rear disk conversion.

Unless you are racing it any kind of brake kit is a waste on a 5 lugger IMHO. It isn’t fast enough nor does it carry or tow enough weight to make the kit useful.

Pickups don't need rear discs unless you haul a lot of weight or tow most of the time. My 2001 Silverado had rear discs and with no weight in the back of the truck, they would lock in bad weather. GM stopped putting rear discs in the 1500 series and my 2009 Silverado with rear drums never had that problem. Disc brakes actually drag constantly and will reduce your mpg as well. Have you tried jacking up the rear of the truck on stands and running it in gear to see if there is a slight wobble to that side? It sounds like something is out of whack and it might be a slightly bent axle or flange.

I despise drum brakes and wanted to swap to disk until this last weekend. I was driving home from Thanksgiving dinner and several cars in front of me were slamming on the brakes. When I jumped on the brakes both of my rear tires chirped. So I will say the rear brakes are more than adequate. I guess it'll save me money and I'll spend it on mods elsewhere.

So I brought the truck back to the dealer, and it ended up being great news! My axle seal did not blow again, and it was determined that the squeaking while braking was the result of some parts needing to be lubed.

The dealer's head technician took the axle apart and found no issues. I was of course not charged for anything.

Needless to say, I will probably not be going to the dealer for anything but a recall. I have no complaints about the customer service at Thompson Toyota, but the costs of parts and labor are just ridiculous!

For example, I'm pretty sure I need a new heater box/blower motor. The dealer quoted me $240 just for the part if I remember correctly. My mechanic found a newer blower motor assembly for like $80!

Also, the dealership used uncoated steel brake drums that have already started to rust. I got some painted/treated brake drums through my mechanic for $85 apiece. These, along with the heater box I mentioned above, will be installed by my mechanic this Friday.

you cant compare a dealer blower motor to an auto zone Chinese blower motor. There are some folks on here selling genuine Toyota parts at a discounted price tho.

It's not a Toyota blower motor, but it's not some Chinese blower either; How much do you think a Toyota blower motor should cost?

Though I did notice that when I pulled the air filter out the noise seems to go away. I've noticed that the air filter is really hard to pull out as well, indicating that it is getting stuck on something....

This actually happened once before in 2011 or 2012. The fan motor started making an obnoxious noise, and the dealer replaced it under warranty without hesitation...

Ecoated drums will rust as well... just buy a 6 dollar can of high heat flat black spray paint and paint the OEM drums (which are going to be better quality than anything aftermarket)

How much are OEM drums? I don't even know why the fuck the dealer replaced my original drums, as they were in decent shape.

Drums were likely replaced due to original axle gear oil contamination. Dealer is going to use OEM drums.... OEM drums are not coated and rust pretty quick. Spray some high temp paint on the drums and call it good.

Actually they are not OEM drums. It would have taken like three days for OEM to arrive, but same-day for aftermarket...

I work at Nissan and see Brake parts come in from autozone all the time.

I initially had reservations about using non-Toyota parts, but my uncle who was a mechanic for many years says that brakes are fine in that respect.

I'm sure most are built in the same factory. I prefer Wagner over most factory parts anyways.

I'll bet even some American car companies get their brakes from the same company as Toyota, Honda, and Nissan...

The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica I drive for work has 4-wheel disc and seems to stop better than my Tacoma!
