All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
I know what you mean. This is by far the shittest drivetrain I have owned in all the 20+ trucks Yotas over the years.

Doesn’t feel good to drop that kinda coin to fix something that should have been working since factory. My truck was shifting all over the place before I put any tires or weight on it.

...and before anyone spouts out about Toyota didn’t not intend this to be modified. It drove like shit stock.

The 5.29s have helped the trans tremendously. If you can, get ahold of someone in your area and drive their rig with 5.29s.
So that you can feel the difference. If you haven’t gotten them by the time I am in your neck, you can drive my shit around for a day.

Thinking similar, but then I always ask myself if adding more power is going to fix the shitty transmission.

The really bad part is that I probably won’t know anyone putting one in and have the chance to test drive. Be careful buying based on the circle jerking that goes on in the ovtune thread, especially to the tune of 7k.

Well ive got about 600 miles on the gears so far and have been enjoying it for the most part... the only gripe I have is that Once it gets into 4th I feel like it falls flat on its face and it up shifts to 4th really quick. I am on 35’s though ‍

Adding FI isn’t going to fix the shitty gear spacing in the auto trans, and who knows if the auto trans can even sustain the additional power for any length of time.

I suspect people are going to throw the turbo kits on and start blowing up their automatic transmissions.

Got the gears installed and I am in the break in period. Loving the way that it pulls up hills.
The shifting has settled down, and I can roll up grades without a downshift.
The RPM change to me is proper, as I felt like it was always to low for proper control at speeds.

    I must say I am impressed :)

To give you an idea of my setup for weight:
    Tires: 255/85/16 KM2s
Armor: Demello Alum Bumper w/winch, Demello Sliders, BudBuilt SS Skids
Bed Load Out: Tepui HD, AllPro Alum Half Rack, Decked Box, Water and Fuel
Cab Load Out: Prinsu Cab Rack, Expedition Box and 4 SOL boards.

And enough bd lights to land an airplane with lol, I wonder how much weight I have with 13 circuits worth lol

Next up is a trip to Marlin ;)

Just ordered my pre-built 3rd and clamshell from ECGS today, will have them in about 2 weeks. I am planning to tackle this install myself, should be a learning experience. I found some 4runner install videos on the ECGS site. Does anyone know of any other how-to videos or articles that you could share?

It's completely doable if you have basic mechanic tools and some patience. Personally, it's my therapy. I've re-geared my Jeeps myself, but for my Toyotas, ECGS is just too good of a deal to pass up.

Took me about a little over an hour or so to rip out the original 3rds, and about the same to put new ones in. Had a little challenge with the stubborn c-clip on one axle shaft, but couple of swear words and it was knocked back in.

To each their own. I love doing my own work and knowing each and every bolt was tightened correctly to spec and appropriate FIPG was used along with recommended oil.

I have an older friend (he's almost 80) who actually believes his cars run better when he's more emotionally connected to them. He would work on them himself as "spending time with them".

Or, you could be one of those guys/gals who doesn't want to get dirty and would rather spend your time getting a pedi. In which case, nobody will judge you to hire it out :)
