Loud THUD when I hit pot-hole/hard dump

Did you have it aligned recently? Check your torque on your LCA Cam Bolts. Last year within a few days post-alignment I had a hard thud that progressively got worse when I would hit a bump, go down my curb, etc. Turns out the shop for whatever reason had the LCA Cam bolts at under 70ft lbs which was wayyyy loose. Torque them to 100 ft lbs with wheels on the ground or a little more and I would go from there see if it fixes your issue. I took em to 110ft lbs on my truck and all thuds went away. Best of luck.

 

I had to research this a ton when I developed a thunk with new suspension and it was the same problem. It seems to be quite common.

 

I also experienced the same thing when I added a lift. The clunk got a little more aggressive when I swapped the 887 to 886. When I purchased the OME lift Marie at Headstrong told me that the nitrochargers can have a metallic clunk to them when going over speed bumps, potholes, etc... She explained it as the shock bottoming out, and didn't express much alarm in that. I have though about straps or new bumpstops to help with it, but low on my priority list right now.

I was hoping an upgrade to kings would alleviate the problem, but that video killed that idea.

Two solutions I see for keeping the same set-up. Revalve your current shocks, or drop the spring rate of the coils. Assuming my ignorant ass is correct anyhow.

 

After you tighten everything and get that top bolt fixed. Buy Wheelers Superbumps and that should help. My shit way almost bone jarring (not really but close) ,replaced those and you will see a difference

 

Let us know if you find resolution. For me it was the LCA bolts. Not a bad thing to check a couple times a year also.

Yeah an alingmali in the past month after replacing my UCAs to JBA, hoping to solve the problem. I'll check the lowers torque settinh when I get home! Good idea

 

Might have found it, my passenger CV axle has about a 1/8" inch play back and forth from the tire to the housing... That normal

 

I do not think that is going to be your "thud" but that is a sign of wear on your passenger needle bearing which is incredibly common on these trucks especially when lifted 2-3". You may hear like a womp womp womp sound when 4wd is not activated. I would be skeptical that it is the "thud" though but can be wrong.

Uh oh ....... I noticed that noise in my 2008 recently

 

Love them. I had a nice solid metallic sound on my drivers side for a long time when hitting bumps and potholes. Had the truck on the rack many times looking for the culprit (I work in the parts dept of a local repair shop so access to a lift isn't hard) and nothing was loose or worn. Took some of the mechanics with me on a few test drives and the bumps were the only thing we could think of. Swapped them out with the wheelers and the sound all but went away.

 

The CV axles have play in them normally. If it's excessive then it might be the needle bearing but there is some play to them. That wouldn't be the source of that clunk though

Loose cam bolts is my guess given you had an alignment recently. A lot of places don't torque them they just get them on there 'gudentight' which may not have been enough

 

The more and more I listen to the thud over bumps, it sounds like the spring to just slamming open again. Sounds like I need to get these shicks rebuilt, or new ones...

 

I've always assumed that it was the spring recoiling. I was told the clunk was normal in the OME Nitrochargers. My interpretation was that it was essentially the shock extending to its max. That is why i considered limit straps previously. After reading some of the suggestions, I may just grab some wheelers super bumps and see if that helps any. I wanted to upgrade to something a little more forgiving anyhow.

 

It is. OME uses an internal metal bump stop in their shocks. I just slowed down on speed bumps, since I didn’t like the sound.

 

Im experiencing that exact same thing on my front drivers side.

 

As far as I know these Toyota 8" clam shells only have the needle bearing on the drivers side. Passenger side is a normal ball bearing

 

I also go pretty slow for the most part, but with dirt roads all around me it happens from time to time. That is what Marie at Headstrong offroad said as well. Not to be alarmed, because she always gets a follow-up call when people install OME nitrochargers and fully extend the suspension the first time.

OP, maybe your shocks have a similar internal stop mechanism?

 

Can I throw a slightly different opinion in here? In the video at 38 seconds you hear the clattering. During that time, the shock is in the compression stroke, not the down stroke. Look at the endlink on the sway bar during the noise. I don't know how to say this but it "looks" like the motion of the sway bar end is directly correlated to the noise. It almost looks like the sway bar is loose or something. Look at the way it pops out to the right side of the screen when that happens. I'm pretty sure the sway bar isn't supposed to move like that.
