So I think my supercharger is shot. This morning the whine at cold idle sounded a bit more noticeable. Drove to work fine. Got in my truck to leave work and after about 5 minutes of driving starting getting a very loud knocking. Almost like the engine fan was hitting something. It would sort of go in and out. Pulled over and let the truck idle while it wasn’t making the very loud sound and I could hear some unusual rattle noises from the SC. I got in my truck and was going back it up some and it started knocking loud again so I shut it off to prevent any further damage. Got it towed home. When I got home I took the belt off and rotated the SC by hand. No noises but the force to spin it was inconsistent. Not very difficult, just not consistent. Felt like some light binding. Anyways I will have to do some more investigating this weekend. I’ve kept up with the maintenance other than a rebuild which I was planning on doing soon (literally in the next few months).

Depending on pulley size it’s normal to have to have the rebuilt at 150,000 -200,000 with stock pulley.

Did you have to remove the headers to get the starter out?

If your going to have it rebuilt nows the time to have it ported if you wanted

We do things like this all the time at my work... Machinist

Anywho, it's not easy when the endmill has to be so physically long, lots of chatter leads to a rough cut. Not saying it couldn't be smoothed and improved but it would be quite a few passes and tool changes and to physically reach the outlet section it would be a different story. I'm not even sure if the live tooling on a mill could do that. I think I'd sooner section the entire blower housing and weld it back together after the work is done.

My point being it's cost prohibitive, good gains for an undersized supercharger for sure. But not gains I'd think most would be willing to pay for.

I believe I was approaching 150k. I did have to loosen some of the flanges on the headers to get enough clearance for the starter.

Makes sense. I was told by Steig that he’s done blowers like this before and I believe someone on here with a 4.0l has had it done. But no telling how he did it.

    EDIT: mentioned inlet only.

I’m still not convinced porting on a M62 makes more power anyway.

150k on the supercharger is a good run but yeah, it sounds like it's time for rebuild

Inlet only probably not, the grey supercharger has lots of potential if running a smaller pulley to open up the air way porting the 3 sections and is not that expensive, I think is was 350.00 for me

TRD used to say a rebuild was due around 90k - 100k but I think that's a pretty conservative estimate, if you're on the stock pulley and keep up with maintenance you can probably go quite a bit longer than that.

Typically the nose bearing goes out 1st, I had one rebuilt that was up to 175,000 or so.

With the smaller pulley spinning faster for me 2” it needs it sooner each time, no big deal.

I can take the supercharger off in 30 minutes or less and install it in a few hours or so

    Well I just drove a 2018 1794 Tundra. And it was ok. It’s a friend’s truck. It was on E so I filled it up. $75 for 87. And that’s why I’m not a fan. I’ll stick to my $38 and 91.

To fill my main tank and my 2nd tank from empty is usually around 32 gallons...that'll get me about 480 highway miles at 15mpg or 320 off road miles at 10mpg. In CA right now that's around $115. I usually have to do it in 2 fills because the pump hits the card max.

I'm so glad my truck isn't my daily driver. Between my truck, daily #1 and daily #2 I still average about 30mpg.

Edit...I forgot my point. I don't really care about the truck's mgps. I care about it's range in that regard. So if the super charger uses more fuel it's not the end of the world. I'll just have less range for remote off road excursions.

Headers came in today for the supercharger it'll be interesting to see how much horsepower gain there actually is, I will definitely find out once they're up and running

I hear ya man. I don’t care about gas mileage one bit. It’s worth it. On an N/A engine, I do though. There’s a certain point where I get pissed. $75 for a tank of naturally aspirated Boring Miles will do it.
