Someone on here did a dyno test and the engine gained nothing by removing the filter, that shows the stock setup already flows more air than the engine needs. Seems like a higher flowing filter would give the same result as no filter.

    Great point there also.

I did link up that thread in the newer air filter dyno thread:

Some people quote that the CAI airbox doesn't seal that well against the hood and allows hot engine heat to get to the filter

Now I know this isn't a Toyota , but is my Camaro and this is a custom built cold air box . The foam sealing the air box to the pan is custom fire proof foam . And when the hood is on it completely seals up only allowing cold air into the carb

You can use this same foam to seal the airbox on the Tacoma . To go even further you can use fireproof sleeving over the CAI tube to further reduce AIT's

    Probably.
If that's true about AFE I'd never use them. As for KN I've had tghem on all sorts of cars without issue I just think it's a waste on a commuter truck like tacoma. The oem filter will probably last 60k miles of normal driving anyways.

Not saying K and N is great, but i did have k and N intake on my previous truck for years with no issues whatsoever. It did improve throttle response and felt like it brought the power band down. Sounded pretty good of course.

Im gonna leave intake on my taco stock, dont see a point installing anything aftermarket or TRD intake.

What about the proven dyno runs from members here who run CAI ? I just saw a dyno sheet from a 2.7 4cyl 2016 that gained over 16 hp and good torque running a header and enclosed afe Intake. The intake alone gave him 5hp and 8tq with the stock exhaust , no other mods.

I may be wrong, but isn't stock a CAI?

Lol you’re absolutely correct. He did however run an AFE enclosed cai and that has no restrictions compared to the stock oem cai. He ran just that, lce engineering header and the stock cat back exhaust. Did 2 pulls on the dyno with good results. Let me find the link and I’ll send it to you.

I'm good, not too educated about this topic and had read elsewhere the same, just was a little confused, thanks for clearing it up.

Why would the 2.7 have anything to do with a CAI on a 3rd Gen 3.5?

Using it as an example, I know it’s a different motor. I have it. Everyone says they don’t work or provide little gains, but there aren’t many dyno sheets if any at all from members who own the 3.5l. Wish there was a comparison to the mfg claims .

There's dyno sheets floating around here showing no filter, no hp improvement etc etc etc. The stock air box is the same box a tundra has. The system gets all the air it needs.

I've been running the AFE CAI with their add on air scoop for a year or so now. Pro-GUARD 7 filter. I think it sounds great, I no longer deal with snow getting packed in the factory airbox, and the washable filter is nice. Horsepower and added fuel economy, probably no

This was after one trip in the desert following other rigs. Spotless inside the air tube. I assume that there are more free-flowing filter options from AFE and other manufacturers, but I'm more interested in clean air.

2 dyno pulls isn't enough to gather information that the intake actually did anything. You can have 3 different dyno pulls on the exact same car and they can register different readings. If you had the mean of your baseline and compared it to the mean after the intake then you might try see if there is a statistic when comparing the two.

If people want to spend their money for some vroom and maybe some performance I say go for it. But for me, I'll pass. I've been putting on intakes on almost every car I've owned the last 20 years except for this one. Just not worth it. Especially ones that are oil-based like k&ns.
