MT. Regearing. Should I go 4.88 or 5.29?

Notifying the shop (Mule) this AM I am going 4.88

 

Did you get your gears in yet?

 

Dec 12 and 13. Like waiting for Christmas!

 

I think @Round the world got 5.29s but has a 1600 lb camper on the back.

 

I ran 255/85/16s before my 285/70/17s. Stock gearing felt a lot better actually with the tall and skinny tires.

 

Question: slightly related (kindof a thread jack...sorry)

Does the M/T Taco actually get BETTER gas mileage with a slightly larger than stock tire? Seems like it would bring the RPMs down at speed. Obviously weight is still a factor...but figured I'd ask.

 

MAYBE. In theory.

My MPG are down because winter and because foot in throttle disease.

I LOVE MY 4.88's. I am 1000% satisfied with my decision.

 

Old thread but here to revive it...

I recently added a 3” lift with pizza cutter 255/85r16s (33”). From stock it feels more sluggish (if that’s the correct term). Going over Mt.Hood I could feel the additional weight of the load E tires and Fiberglass canopy resulting in me dropping to 4th gear to maintain 60mph. I should also add I’m a manual. Is it too unreasonable to be able to maintain 5th or 6th gear going over a pass? Or would I be more pleased spending the money on getting 4.88s?

 

For sure get the 4.88's. You will not regret it.
