Jump starter/pack worth having?

Have one in each of my three trucks......

Sometimes its convenient to have a 12 V DC power source that doesn't weigh 45 pounds.

Lipo jump pack? I have a couple 3s packs I have used but I can't imagine keeping these in a car. Lipos don't take heat all that well and do catch fire relatively easily. Do you have a link to the one you bought?

 

I have a Die Hard one I got from Menards. I had to use it once when I used my inverter too much and drained my battery. Worked well even at like 30% charged.

I keep one in the storage bins in my Access Cab - next to my jumper cables. I can think of more times than not that they would be handy.

I love this jump starter. I’m always paranoid I will be stranded in the middle of nowhere with no people. This thing works great

 

I use a HALO lithium-ion jump pack and I love it! I have jumped an F-350 whose battery was dead while camping. Hooked it up, waited a few minutes, and started on first try. The Halo also has two USB charging ports, an LED light, and wireless phone charging. I charge it twice a year or so. Its compact size lets me store it in the glove box or console.

Noco GB40 for a couple of years now. Holds a charge forever it seems, even if used. It spent most of that time in my daughters truck, while she was commuting 60 miles one way to school every day. That's the main reason I got it, even though she has cables in the truck, (as do all my vehicles) I wanted her to be able to get herself out of a bind vs being dependent on someone to help jump start her.

 

Here's a pro tip for those lithium-ion-based jump starters. (Or maybe just the speculation of a lunatic, but it's what I do.)

Don't charge it to 100% and leave it in your truck until you need it. Especially in the summer.

Heat destroys batteries, but most lithium batteries degrade a LOT faster at full charge than at partial charge. So if you keep it fully charged in a hot truck cab all summer, you'll have a useless brick within a year or two.

Store it at 40 to 60% charge, it'll last a lot longer. That's plenty enough to jump start your truck. I tested this by leaving my headlights on for a whole day, until the battery was reading 6 volts. (I was about to hand it in as a core for a new AGM battery anyway, so why not?) An "18 amp hour" battery booster thing (price range: $70) had no problem jumping my engine three times in a row, starting from only 50% charge. And it still had charge left after the third jump.

When I'm heading to the remote back-country, for example, the furthest most desolate corner of the shopping mall parking lot, I'll charge it to 100% just in case. But days later, when I get home, I use it to charge my phone until it's back around 60%, for long term storage.

Even if you never need it for a jump, you should use it as a charging station a few times a year, discharge below 10%, then fully recharge it, then back to 40-60%. This will keep the charge meter calibrated, and give you advanced warning when it's starting to crap out.

Remember, it is a battery, so it will be a useless brick in 5 years no matter what you do.

I have one and I love it. I like being able to help someone in a parking lot without worrying about getting my truck around near them. Or being able to go and jump my truck if I need to without trying to find someone else. I got mine from Amazon as well. And it does fit behind the seat. It does rock around a little bit so a lot of times I keep an emergency blanket around it just so I’m not hearing the rocking all the time.

Fits behind the back driver side seat no probs.

Ill pull it out one a quarter or every other month and let it charge.

 

Same reason for me. Wife and I had a dead battery in the Houston airport parking garage some years ago. Jumper cables in hand, couldn’t get anyone to help us. People suck. Had to call AAA.

noco gb40 came in last night, it was $100 few weeks ago so I waited and got it for $65 on cyber Monday, all charged up and behind seat storage to help anyone in need if need be.

 

My wife bought me a GOOLOO a few years back. I had never heard of them, but she said she did her research and they were a reliable unit. It was a 10,000mAh one. I used it many times to jump myself, atvs, dirtbikes, random strangers vehicles. We also regularly use it to charge our cell phones on planes or when camping. We've since got a bigger one (and still use both), which i'm linking below. I bought a pile of them last year when they were on sale for Cyber Monday, gave them out to family.

I was able to buy an adapter for this one that has a cigarette style plug to run 12v stuff. My last camping trip I blew my fuses in my Habitat due to a failed Goal Zero light. Was able to run my other three lanterns for hours off of the GOOLOO. My wife has even run her heated blanket from it, although it would automatically shutoff after 15 minutes (but you could simply press the button and have it fire up again).

To me, these lightweight jump packs are awesome to have around. And if you use them regularly, you don't need to worry about them being dead when you need them, as you'll charge them just as regularly.

I recently ordered a 1000A Audew from Amazon for $60 but haven't received it yet. Better safe than sorry, plus it can charge my phone.

I thought about carrying a spare Denso starter relay as well. Only about $15 or so, might be worth it. But maybe the relay for the horn would work in a pinch?

 

My GOOLOO 20800 mAh is a beast. Has never failed to start anything dead, including my 7.1 liter Pontiac. You won't regret having one. Just remember to top off the charge every few months.

EDIT: Just remembered this story: I once drove a Chevy Tracker 13 miles with no battery, just the GOOLOO under the hood.
