35s add on a lot of rotational weight, regearing will help it but not get all your MPG back
    a lift increases increases drag

I towed a 3500 lb camper and the MPG did go down a lot.

My 1995 F350 7.3 turbo 4x4 CCLB with 35s gets 14 MPG when towing 12.5k fifth wheel, 2 adults and four 13 year olds and a ton (2000lbs) of camping stuff

I have 4.11s in the front and rear of my 2nd gen.

front is from a 4cyl and rear I got from ECGS

that being said, 4.56 is probably better for your application.

My camper is 4500 empty, 25 foot.

Stock gears, but up graded to a 2014 GMC Yukon XL for towing duty.....works great.

Just got the 4.56 gears done. Haven't been able to fully see how well it performs since first 500 miles is break-in period but seems about right especially when I got on the highway. RPMs seem to shift similar to stock!

Yeah, I’m calling bullshit on your 7.3 mileage numbers. There’s no way a 12.5k fiver will ever let you get 14 in any truck, ever. My totally stock 7.3 SCSB will only occasionally break 12 with my Tacoma on the car trailer. Pulling my 17k 7’ tall gooseneck, I get 8-11.

    You have 3.55 gears?

Open trailer does have more drag. I would expect to get lower mpg when towing 17k.

Just to follow up, I ended up selling the Tacoma and purchasing an F150 ecoboost to meet my needs towing.

I’m in a similar situation. I absolutely love my taco, it’s been a great truck, but towing my RZR up hills is a struggle. Is the F150 as good as advertised towing?

OMG yes. The ecoboost is ridiculously powerful. Makes needing a 3/4 ton a moot point. I will say I am installing Timbrens on the truck to help with the load level issue (all trucks have that) but pulling the trailer, I could still probably burn rubber lol.

I'm loving the F150. The extra space is super nice as well, while getting similar gas mileage as the Tacoma which is sad that a mid sized truck gets similar to a full size. I loved my Tacoma but after using the F150, Toyota needs to step it up.
