    Watch out .
    I got hacked today on the my desktop.

    Called the number and talked to some one that was helping me , that is for sum of $348.00.

    I told him that i was not going to purchase his services.

    He asked why an it told him that he was scamming me and i wasn't going to pay. He was pissed and said he wouldn't have wasted his time with me if i wasn't going to pay .

    So now its off to buy a new computer with my son in law.

    Bastards.

    1) How do you know that you were hacked and it wasn't just a scam?
    2) Why would you buy a new computer (hardware) to fix a software problem (assuming that there even is a problem)?

    Try a couple free programs like https://www.malwarebytes.com/

    Also, I've seen webpage popups with big alerts asking you call the scam # because "Microsoft" wants to fix your issue. So if that's what you wound up calling, a new computer will also show those same scam popups webpages.

    Let me guess, Crypto Lock virus? Been there, done that, lost all the files to prove it.

    He said he "called the number". It was probably just an ad for a virus cleaning service.

    Try this instead of the redmond virus;
    https://getfedora.org/

    Then if you are ever tempted to call the scammer, you can have some fun with them knowing that they can't harm you.

    Ok, so look. If you caught a virus, then you need to clean it. That means rebooting it on a safe operating system, wiping the disk, and reinstalling everything from scratch. There is ABSOLUTELY NO NEED to spend money on this. That link I posted a couple of posts up is a FREE and OPEN SOURCE operating system that is used by the VAST majority of all computers on the planet (which includes your cellphone, unless its made by a fashion company with a fruity logo).

    Read the website for instructions on how to write it to a USB disk (which you will do with a DIFFERENT computer), and then boot off that USB disk and follow the instructions to install.

    And don't download pirated software from questionable websites any more.

    @TOMB, sorry to hear...

    As stated above, there are quite a few options that you can run at home to help (another link with some options below), but will definitely take some reading/research/time.

    Without stating the obvious, I would highly suggest investing a good protection suite for the future after you clean up, so many threats out there nowadays and saves all this crap you will be having to deal with now.

    Good luck
