Rear view mirror location

The location of the rear view mirrror is something that has bugged me since i first got my truck, i just haven't taken the time to complain about it. But today i read a post in the new member forums and one of the newbies was complaining about the same thing, so i thought i would start this tread.

In my opinion, the rear view mirror is located in a very inconvenient spot. It's right in my field of vision. when i'm making a turn or going through an intersetion i have to duck my head to look under it to make sure it's not covering up a car. I havn't heard this complaint before so maybe not everyone experiences it. placement may be different on different cabs. I have the double cab. It's a fairly irritating/dangerous problem and i find it hard to believe Toyota didn't pay any attention at all when they chose to place the mirror, so i didn't know if it was just me or if others have noticed this. I'm 6ft tall, if i were 6'3 or 6'4 i dont know how i would deal with it. I have considered moving it but there are two problems with that.

1) im afraid if i move it up it will not be at the right angle and i will not be able to see out of the back of my truck

2)directly above the mirror are raised black bumps and im afraid the adheisive wont stick well to them.

does anyone else have this problem with their mirror? has anyone come up with any solutions? if i move it up can i still see out of the back? any suggestions or feedback would be appreciated

 

Hey ND, same freakin problem for me. This is what was posted on TN:

The rear view mirror can be moved, if you look the base where it is mounted to the windsheild, you will notice that it can rotate, (like a ball joint) just ratate it up and it will get it out of your way.


I can't get my damn mirror to do what he said. I just pm'd barlowrs and asked for pics. If this doesn't work I am going to just have it moved up onto the black nub things. They are the antenna right?

alright TJO, i took some pics and just finished loading em up. Mine's pretty much bone stock except for the tinted windows and traded grille

 

finally being under 6ft has an advantage!!! no such issues for me thankfully, im 5'9" though I have a sitting hight of 6'2" so odd that I don't get that issue apparently im so close to the mirror it doesn't matter lol.

 

My only blind spot is forward of the rt.r. door. just look out the window.
Choppers would be hard to see but you can hear them.
I am very pleased with the rear visibility on mine. I am used to good mirrors on my other trucks. These are not as big but are good enough to save me turning my head.
I mainly use the side mirrors. I would not miss the rear view a bit. You may just want to remove it.
Different truck though.

 

I thought the same thing about mine, it took me about 2 months to get used to it.

 

Hey ND, your trucks looks good buddy! Good pics and thanks for getting them up. I totally brainfarted on the mirror relocation thing. The mirror is double hinged. Push the mirror itself as far as it will go up on the lower hinge. Then bend the mirror itself down on the upper hinge. Believe it or not it bought me a good couple inches of visual space. Good luck and DON'T rip it OFF!!!!!!

Same dang problem with mine. Do as the others have suggested and it will definitely improve (but not completely fix) the forward vision problem of the Tacoma. I was thinking about some after market mirror that has a greater adjustment range......

 

TJO: you're advice worked great, i never bothered to check to see if it would pivot but it does! I have a much clearer field of vision now, i think originally mine was as low as it goes and felt like it took up the entire windsheild. That was an easy problem to solve Thanks TJO!

I was abe to improve my field of vision as suggested by some of the other members.

and i am continuing to get used to it.

I may experiment with moving it though. I beleive the black dots are to reduce sun glare and can likely be scaped a bit to allow for a remount.

Ill repost if in fact i do the modification.

Back on subject - I don't have this issue, but then again - the very first time I got in my truck and adjusted the seat - I smacked the rear view mirror all the way up with my head. DOHT!

Thanks for the guidance, TJO! I am also 6'2" and that mirror was driving me nuts. It's still not real good though. With the 2 back seat headrests in their usual location you have very little vision out the back window on a DC. Having driven cars my whole life I am not used to this. I am slowly learning to rely on my outside mirrors.

I have this same problem! I'm 6'1" and it bugs the hell outta me. Never thought to try to pivot it! I'll try it in the morning.

 

I'm about 6' 2" and my head comes real close to the roof but, I still have no problem with where the rear view mirror is located.

 

Damn, its amazing how many of us had the problem and that none of us bothered to reach up and try to move the dam thing.... i just assumed it was in a fixed position until i started this thread. rhoppas, i also had the problem with the rear seat headrests.... i just took 'em out, now i see a whole lot better. I dont think anyone in the rear ever uses them anyway, and if they have a problem with it, we can take their car.....
