Bought Trd off road wheels for 2015 Tacoma. What TPMS sensor do I need!?

So I just bought some trd offroad take offs from a 3rd gen Tacoma. Went to my buddies shop and we tried to swap the tpms sensors off my aftermarket American racing wheels and NADA... They did not work with the 3rd gen Tacoma offroad wheels. My question is which freaking sensors do I need? My 2015 sr5 came original with steel wheels but I'm not even sure if the sensors that are in the American racing wheels are the original sensors or not! I do know the steel and aluminum have different sensors. So I looked up part numbers and looks like 2015 aluminum wheels and the 2016-2019 aluminum wheels have different part numbers. Which ones do I need, the 3rd gen aluminum wheel sensor or the 2nd gen aluminum wheel sensor? It gives the option for 20° angle sensors and 40° angle sensors.

Also the guy I bought these trd offroad wheels from said they came off a 2020 Tacoma and that the tpms sensors from a 2020 would not work with my 2015 at all... Is this true???

2005-15 don't work with 16+ it's true.

 

I'm sorry your misunderstanding me. I get that but, will the 2020 sensors not work for me? I'll have to buy the 2016-2019 sensors? I'm not sure what would be different with them.

My buddy has the scanner and we can program the 3rd gen sensors to work with my truck. Just not sure which ones to get. I want to buy the sensors from the guy I bought the wheels from but apparently the 2020 sensors wont work? ‍‍The reason I want to buy them from him is because he only wants 40 dollars for them. They are over 200 for new ones.

 

I bought 5th gen T4R wheels for my 2013. I bought the Denso 550-0103 TPMS Sensor from Amazon. I would think you'll need the sensors that go with the truck's computer.

I think you will need sensors from a 2nd gen truck... my understanding is that 3rd gen sensors will not work on 2nd gen trucks.

I put 2018 TRD OR wheels on my '15 TRD OR... I used the original sensors off the '15 factory wheels. They work fine.

Thanks 682bear. Ok, I thought I read somewhere that you could get the 3rd gens to work at the dealer or with a special scanner. @682bear was your truck aluminum factory wheels? The steel wheel is a 20° angle sensor. The aluminum is a 40° angle sensor. I guess I need the 2015 40° angle sensor...

Ok so the aluminum wheels... mine Has the steel wheels. They are different. Just to clarify with anybody I need the toyota part number 42607-06012? What really sucks is they cost almost 300 dollars after tax and shipping are you freaking kidding me! Ouch!

 

Buy the ones I linked you from Amazon. To my understanding Denso makes the Toyota ones. I had the factory aluminum wheels. I just decided to replace them since they were almost 7yrs old.
Or you can add your truck to your garage in Amazon and it will tell you which ones fit.

You have this backwards. The aluminum wheel sensors are 20 degrees. You need 2nd gen aluminum wheel sensors. Denso sensors are available on Amazon for about $37 each.

3rd gen sensors absolutely positively won’t work with a 2nd gen.

Denso 550-0103 as that is what came up as the correct sensor on Amazon. However, I have not yet installed them yet as I need to first buy tires.

 

How about none? Seriously, the TPS system is a pain. Run none, save your $$. Do the indicator light ground fix. Cars ran for a 100 years with out a TPS system.

The tpms did come in handy on my Ram truck. Cracked the sidewall, slow leak was able to pull off way before it got completely flat. That was nice but I'd save 200 bucks with what you just said.

 

I used info in this thread. There are a couple of options and I think links to other postings. On my '06 I did the ground method located in the passenger kick panel. I cut no wires and soldered no wires. I just stuck a wire where indicated into the back of the plug wire and grounded the other end ASIR. I have had no issues in 2-years.

Just use the sensors from you old rims.

 

My old rims are steel wheels and use a different sensor. They do not fit. We tried.

 

Thanks taco bypassing mine in the morning. Bought some Male female connectors and a 1 amp fuse to ground. Saving money. Most of you wont do it this way but this mod is right up my alley. I cam always return it to factory within minutes. TACO YOU THE MAN
